It's time to get schwifty — "Rick and Morty" Season 6 is officially on its way, with creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland hard at work on the next batch of episodes. The animated sci-fi series has become a major hit since its debut in 2013 and fans are clamoring for their next hit of wacky sci-fi action. But what's on the cards for Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith in the upcoming Season 6?
"Rick and Morty" delivered a real cliff-hanger in the Season 5 finale, with the Citadel destroyed and Evil Morty on his way to a universe outside of Rick's influence. It's the sort of finale that really turns a show on its head, and we can't wait to find out how Rick and Morty are going to handle this one. Will they track down Evil Morty and put things right, or has the multiverse been changed forever? Here's what we know about "Rick and Morty" Season 6 so far.
When and Where to Watch Rick and Morty Season 6
"Rick and Morty" Season 6 will head to Adult Swim, likely sometime in 2022 or beyond. At the moment, there's no confirmed release date, but it's thought that the upcoming season will debut a year after the Season 5 finale. That makes October 2022 a solid prediction.
There was a one-year break between Season 4 and Season 5, so this definitely makes sense. After "Rick and Morty" was renewed for a further 70 episodes, we'll likely see more regular seasons than in the show's early years.
Spencer Grammar previously revealed that Season 6 is already in the works and likely won't take quite so long to head to our TVs. "I keep saying, there's gonna be so many more episodes," she told Inverse. "They're writing Season 6 already and are probably going to start writing Season 7 soon. It's nice to be on a real schedule that people can see every year, hopefully, but who knows, it could be two years! I don't want to give anybody high hopes, but I don't know that it'll be three years again."
What We Think Rick and Morty Season 6 Will Be About
This is the big question –- where will "Rick and Morty" go after that multiverse-altering season finale?
Here's a quick recap in case you need a refresher: Season 5 ended with Evil Morty blowing up the Citadel and destroying the Central Finite Curve – a barrier which kept universes with Rick at the top of the food chain walled off.
The destruction of the Citadel has huge implications for the show – for one thing, it could mean that Rick's supply of portal fluid has gone up in smoke. At the very end of the Season 5 finale, we see Rick toss his empty portal gun to the ground. Will portal technology work at all after this catastrophic event? Season 6 will surely have to answer this question quickly.
It's also likely that Evil Morty has opened up a whole new multiverse of possibilities – destroying the Central Finite Curve allows travel to universes where Rick Sanchez isn't the top dog. Evil Morty is headed to one of those universes as we speak, and that's likely not going to end well for our Rick and Morty. For one thing, it's going to be almost impossible for C-137 Rick to chase him if there's no more portal fluid to go around.
Season 6 is going to have to answer all these questions if Rick and Morty are going to save the multiverse. Either that, or thanks to the meta-humour of the show, everything will be back to normal the minute Season 6 kicks off. Who knows.
Where to Watch the Rick and Morty Season 6 Trailer
Right now, there's no Season 6 trailer and we shouldn't expect one for a while. The "Rick and Morty" Season 5 trailer was released on March 30, 2021 — just three months ahead of the show's premiere on June 20, 2021. It was a similar story for "Rick and Morty" Season 4, with the first official trailer revealed in October 2019 ahead of the Season 4 debut on November 10, 2019.
However, that doesn't mean we won't get a glimpse of Season 6 a lot sooner. Adult Swim released a first look Season 5 animatic on July 25, 2021 — 11 months ahead of the premiere on June 20, 2021. This could mean we'll see a similar first look by the end of the year, with an animatic giving us a glimpse of the upcoming Season 6. But as ever, nothing has yet been announced.
What We Know About the Rick and Morty Season 6 Cast and Crew
Although there haven't been any official "Rick and Morty" Season 6 announcements, there's one thing we can count on –- the Smith family will almost certainly be back. This means Justin Roiland will be back voicing Rick and Morty, joined by Sarah Chalke as Beth, Chris Parnell as Jerry, and Spencer Grammer as Summer.
Sarah Chalke recently revealed how long she wants to remain on the show: "Forever and ever in every multiverse that exists in this dimension and every other dimension!" she told SciFiNow.
"When you've got a good gig as an actor, especially when it's on something that you're proud of and you enjoy watching yourself and is beloved like 'Rick and Morty' you just do it do it as long as they'll have you," added Chriss Parnell.
However, the show has started using more and more guest stars in recent years, with the likes of Elon Musk, Taika Waititi, and Steve Buscemi voicing "Rick and Morty" characters. If the show's popularity is anything to go by, we should expect more high-profile guest starts in the upcoming Season 6. As of right now, nothing has been confirmed.
How Far Along is Production on Rick and Morty Season 6?
Although the Season 6 plot is firmly under wraps, it's basically all been written. The sixth season of "Rick and Morty" has been in production since 2020, with creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland working on the show's scripts since then.
"I often get confused right now between Season 5 and Season 6," Harmon said during PaleyFest NY in October 2020. "Immediately after this panel, I'll be reviewing an animatic for a late Season 5 episode. Yet, we are very late in the season ... writing Season 6, looking at finales for both seasons and then also refining the finale of one and the premiere of another."
Harmon also confirmed during a special "Community" table read that writer Alex Rubens, who penned Season 2's "Big Trouble in Little Sanchez," has also returned to the show. "The script we're reading, Cooperative Polygraphy, is by Community and Rick and Morty alum Alex Rubens, who is BACK at RaM writing on Season 6," he said via Instagram.
By February 2021, "Rick and Morty" writer Rubens tweeted that the team had begun writing Season 7. "Am I allowed to say we started writing Rick and Morty Season 7?" he asked. "(If not we didn't and I'm not)". That's a pretty good indicator that the scripts for Season 6 have been completed.
