2019 Critics Choice Awards Nominations Love 'The Favourite' And 'Black Panther'

The long march through awards season continues today with the announcement of the 24th Critics Choice Awards nominations. It might seem predictable that a period film like The Favourite came out on top of the pack with 14 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and nominations for the three stars, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, you might be surprised that the Marvel Studios blockbuster Black Panther wasn't far behind with 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Another surprise among the nominations list is that First Man, which was starting to be counted out of the awards race, has made a surprising comeback here with 10 nods, including Best Picture and Best Director, as well as nominations for Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories.

Mary Poppins Returns, A Star Is Born, and Vice aren't far behind, the former being quite the surprising contender this awards season. Each of those movies rounded up nine nominations total, and they're all up for Best Picture long with Roma, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk and, surprisingly and thankfully, BlackKklansman.

It should be noted that last year, The Shape of Water ended up with as many nominations as The Favourite and the movie went on to win Best Picture and Best Director.

On the television side of things, in the drama categories, critics continue to love The Americans and Better Call Saul, but new shows like Homecoming on Amazon, Killing Eve at BBC America and My Brilliant Friend and Succession at HBO also got plenty of love this year.

Meanwhile, in the comedy categories, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Good Place, Barry and Atlanta rightfully landed plenty of nominations. The freshman series The Kominsky Method on Netflix also made a decent showing for its first time out.

Finally, on the limited series side of things, Sharp Objects, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, and  Escape at Dannemora earned plenty of love from critics too.
