The Morning Watch: THR Director's Roundtable, The Oscar-Losing Work Of Roger Deakins & More
The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.
In this edition, The Holly wood Reporter hosted their annual rountable discussion with the directors who have been buzzed about this awards season. Plus, watch a video showing how insane it is that cinematographer Roger Deakins has been nominated for 14 Oscars and hasn't won a single one. And see what Quentin Tarantino's Star Trek might look like.
This year's full director's roundtable from The Hollywood Reporter features Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), Angelina Jolie (First They Killed My Father), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird), Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), and Joe Wright (Darkest Hour). Presumably Jordan Peele was busy when they shot this, and Guillermo del Toro and Greta Gerwig are the only ones who ended up with Oscar nominations.
The folks at the Toronto International Film Festival put together this reel showing off the 14-time Academy Award nominated work of cinematographer Roger Deakins. Before earning his 14th nomination this year for Blade Runner 2049, he lost the award 13 times before, and this video shows which films he was nominated for as well as which movies he lost the award to.
Finally, the folks at Nerdist have put together a Grindhouse and Pulp Fiction style trailer imagining what Star Trek might look like in the hands of Quentin Tarantino. It's a fun distraction, even if it features a lame, non-copyright infringing version of Dick Dale's "Misirlou" instead of the real track. But we're still excited to see what the real thing looks like, if it ever actually gets in front of a camera.
