'Stranger Things' Throwback Thursday Posters: The Duffer Brothers Never Say Die
We've still got some time until the second season of Stranger Things starts streaming on Netflix just before Halloween. The brand new trailer that debuted at Comic-Con was good enough to hold us over for awhile, but we'll take whatever we can get to whet our appetite.
That's why we're glad the official Stranger Things Twitter account is partaking in a promotional endeavor called #StrangerThursdays, where they rewatch each episode of the first season every Thursday (leading up to the second season premiere) and live tweet with cheeky posts, behind the scenes details about specific scenes and more. The coolest part of this lead-up is they kick off an episode by revealing a new Stranger Things poster inspired by one of the 1980s movies that influenced the show.
In the coming weeks, we'll be updating this post with the newest Stranger Things posters, but you can see which ones have been revealed below, as well as the original posters that inspired them.
This week, the whole crew from Hawkins gets together in this poster taking a cue from The Goonies:
The illustrations (or probably Photoshop) in this particular poster could use some work here and there, but it's cool to see the whole ensemble cast of the series together in a single poster.
The seventh week put the demogorgon in place of Bruce the shark while recreating the famous Jaws teaser poster:
The demogorgon just might have bigger jaws than the famous shark, and it's a little more dangerous too since it's not limited to being stuck in the water while pursuing Eleven in the real world.
Week six features Winona Ryder being sucked into the ground, taking a cue from The Evil Dead teaser poster:
Even though Winona Ryder doesn't end up stuck in The Upside Down, or in any scenario like this at all, but the image is still a fun one to play with in this line of poster tributes.
The fifth week puts Eleven in the spotlight and puts her in the place of Drew Barrymore in Firestarter:
Eleven doesn't have the same powers as Drew Barrymore's character in the Stephen King adaptation, but she's still quite the precocious and powerful little girl.
The fourth week gives Stranger Things an Alien-themed poster with a warning about The Upside Down:
We never see any demogorgon eggs that I can recall, but maybe we'll see where the monstrous creatures come from in The Upside Down when the second season debuts this October.
For the third poster, Stranger Things gave David Harbour the spotlight with a Running Man inspired poster:
Hopper may not exactly be as badass as Arnold Schwarzenegger, but he does get a couple heroic moments here and there. He's one of the few people to give Winona Ryder the time of day when she starts hearing from her son Will as he's stuck in the Upside Down.
Here's the Stranger Things poster inspired by A Nightmare on Elm Street:
The two movies share a character named Nancy and a monster who will stop at nothing to kill them. The reworking of the tagline isn't quite as clever as I'd like, but at least the same style is there. It almost looks like a Fear Street cover.
Here's the first Stranger Things Throwback Thursday poster, inspired by Stephen King's Stand by Me:
Clearly the color scheme was changed up a bit to be more in line with the Stranger Things aesthetic, so it's more dark than light, but the spirit of the poster is there, not to mention the same font for the title. Stand by Me is one of the many movies that Stranger Things draws from for inspiration, especially when it comes to the dynamic of the kids at the center of the story.

There are also new cast members like Sadie Sink as Max, Dacre Montgomery as Billy, Linnea Berthelsen as Roman, Sean Astin as Bob Newby, Paul Reiser as Dr. Owens, Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman and Will Chase as Neil Mayfield.
The Duffer Brothers are directing the first two episodes, "Mad Max" and "The Boy Who Came Back To Life," Shawn Levy is directing the next two episodes, "The Pumpkin Patch" and "The Palace", with the next two installments are being directed by Andrew Stanton titled "The Storm" and "The Pollywog." Rebecca Thomas directed "The Secret Cabin" and The Duffer Brothers directed the last two installments of the season, "The Brain" and "The Lost Brother."
In 1953, MKUltra came to Hawkins, Indiana and began experimentation. In 1979, Police Chief Jim Hopper returns to Hawkins. On November 6, 1983 a young boy named Will Byers vanished. Two days later, Barbara Holland also vanished. A year after Will's return, everything seems back to normal... but a darkness lurks just beneath the surface, threatening all of Hawkins.
Stranger Things season 2 premieres on October 27, 2017.
