2017 Critics Choice Awards Nominations: 'La La Land' Takes The Lead With 12 Nods

Awards season has officially begun, and we're going to be hearing a lot about which movies are garnering accolades from various critics groups, guilds and eventually the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The Independent Spirit Awards were first out of the gate with their nominations last week, and now the 2017 Critics Choice Awards nominations from the Broadcast Film Critics Association have arrived.

What's fun about this particular line-up of nominees is that in addition to the usual powerful dramas that typically get nominated for awards, the BFCA also hands out awards for Best Action Movie, Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie and Best Comedy, and the latter category isn't full of movies pretending to be comedies like at the Golden Globes.

Check out the full list of 2017 Critics Choice Awards nominations after the jump.

The anticipated musical La La Land leads the pack of all movies with a whopping 12 nominations, including all the big prizes for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and of course, Best Song and Best Score. It's just more fuel to the fire that I have to see this movie as soon as possible (if you're in New York and Los Angeles this weekend, you'll be able to see it).

Up next, Arrival and Moonlight (which also was huge at the Indie Spirit Awards) com in with 10 nominations. Hopefully this means that the Academy of Motions Picture Arts and Sciences will give Arrival some Oscar love when the time comes next year.

There are some unworthy inclusions in the line-up this year, particularly Sully in the Best Picture category. I'm not sure why Jackie isn't sitting there instead (though Natalie Portman did get nominated). Even the outstanding Edge of Seventeen deserves to be in the Best Picture line-up more than Sully.

Sadly, Silence wasn't included in the awards because it didn't get screened for critics in time. The same goes for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story on the blockbuster side of things. Last year, you might remember that Star Wars: The Force Awakens got nominated after the votes were supposed to be closed. That created quite the stir in the critic community, and it reeked of just wanting attention, but there's no indication that will happen again this year.

But the one thing that has me frustrated is Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping missing from the Best Comedy category. That movie is funnier and better than almost all of those nominees, and it got completely snubbed. That's outrageous.

Anyway, here's the full list of 2017 Critics Choice Awards nominations:
