Learn Why Joss Whedon Cut Hulk's Best Scene From 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'

Every member of The Avengers gets at least one big moment to shine in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, with Vision and Hawkeye probably coming out on top. But one of the core members of the team, arguably the favorite from the first superhero assembly, had what would have been one of their greatest moments taken away. In a recent interview, director Joss Whedon said that the best Hulk scene in The Avengers: Age of Ultron was cut.

Some minor spoilers follow for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner and The Hulk is one of the better defined and developed heroes in the stuffed Marvel sequel. And while the character certainly gets more than enough screentime, especially for his romance with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), there's one mystery scene that Whedon just couldn't bring himself to include.Birth. Movies. Death. (formerly Badass Digest) talks about a scene that was in the script for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, but ended up not making the final cut of the film. They describe the scene as potentially "THE fist-pumping moment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe." Thankfully, the site asked Whedon himself why the scene didn't end up in the movie. So what was the scene? Whedon's not giving it away just yet:

"I don't talk about it specifically because I said to Marvel, 'You can use this in another movie! Hold on to that!'"

All right, he won't tell us what the scene entailed, but he does explain why it ended up on the cutting room floor:

"Sometimes what seems like a moment turns out to be a move. That turned out to be a move.

It's a great gag, but I couldn't justify it. We were building a lot of the final battle around it, and it was killing us. Even when we were shooting. We had to stutter-step everything else, and eventually in post I convinced them we need to jettison this concept. I knew I could write a conclusion for Bruce and Natasha that I thought would be much better storytelling, and would be a real moment."

So this would have been huge, fun moment for Hulk, and the Marvel cinematic universe as a whole. Therefore, I can only applaud Whedon for making the decision to cut it instead of crippling some other parts of the story in favor of keeping the gag. There are some other story problems that The Avengers: Age of Ultron has in the movie still, but that's a discussion for another day.

Now we're wondering what this scene would have been and when we might see it. There's no plans for another standalone Hulk movie in the future, mostly because Universal Pictures still has the rights to do those, so that's not in the cards. We haven't heard whether or not Banner will pop up in Captain America: Civil War, but we're betting he's going to stay hidden.

So that likely means the earliest we could see this scene would be in one of the two parts of The Avengers: Infinity War, which we just learned will be shot back-to-back over a period of nine months. We'll have to wait and see if directors Anthony & Joe Russo see fit to put the scene into the next Avengers assembly.

Anyone have any ideas on what kind of scene this might be?
