The Super Mario Galaxy Post-Credits Scenes, Explained
Don't eat any mushrooms or bust any blocks with your noggin if you haven't seen "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." Spoilers ahead!
"The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," for fans of this budding big screen franchise, picks up almost precisely where 2023's "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" left off and reintroduces us to Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi, and the villainous Bowser (voiced by Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and Jack Black, respectively). Not only that, but we also get to meet new characters from Nintendo's storied Super Mario video games, too, including Yoshi, Princess Rosalina, and Bowser Jr., to name a few. So, when the credits roll on this sequel, should you stick around and watch its two post-credits scenes? (This is, notably, the movie following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which also featured a post-credits scene.)
Honestly, yes. First of all, the super-stylized credit sequence that runs before the full list of credits — including the massive list of names from Illumination Studios Paris, which helped create the movie's look — will keep you entertained while you wait to see what's going on in these scenes. So, what about the first post-credits scene, which takes place partway through that imaginative credits sequence?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's first post-credits scene is just a fun little continuation of the story
Before I explain the first post-credits scene in "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," let me provide just a little context ... and spoil the end of the movie. As I mentioned, this film picks up right after "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," and during the conclusion of that story, Mario, Luigi, and Peach manage to use a mushroom to shrink Bowser down (at which point any of them can hold him in the palm of their hand), so he's not a danger anymore. Unfortunately, for the good guys, this means that Bowser's enterprising son Bowser Jr. (voiced, inexplicably, by Benny Safdie) is desperate to track down his dear old dad and free him, so he devises an evil plan to capture Rosalina (voiced by Brie Larson) and steal all of her power. In the process, he also builds a "Boomsday Device" to impress Bowser Sr. after he does manage to bring him aboard his ship.
Even though Bowser briefly becomes an ally to Peach, Mario, Luigi, Peach's loyal lieutenant Toad (voiced by Keegan-Michael Key), and their new dinosaur friend Yoshi (voiced by Donald Glover), he switches sides once he reunites with his son, so they both end up in prison. That's what we see in the post-credits sequence, actually. While the elder and younger Bowsers try to dig a hole in their prison cell floor, one of Rosalina's adopted children, a star known as Lumas, shows up to taunt them as a "bad cop." It's a funny little interlude, but unlike the other post-credits scene, it doesn't set up any future movies in the greater Nintendo cinematic universe.
You'll want to stick around for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's final post-credits scene
Time for some more context! Partway through "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," right when Peach and Toad arrive at the massive space port known as the Gateway Galaxy to try and find Rosalina, they encounter a little crying monkey looking for his friends. Turns out that the tears are a scam, and the monkey absconds with Toad's backpack ... which is filled with powered-up mushrooms and gold coins. As a result, Peach and Toad give chase to the monkey and ultimately track him down, incurring the wrath of the crime lord frog Wart (voiced by Luis Guzmán) in the process.
So, what does this have to do with the film's second post-credits scene? Well, that's where we see a monkey — which may or may not be the same one we already met — robbing a little creature from Nintendo's video games known as a Whittle (which looks like a log with legs), only for the monkey to find themself held accountable. As they're prevented from running away by an unseen force, the camera "pans" over ... and we see that Princess Daisy, the brunette royal in her signature yellow dress, is that force.
Rumors have swirled for some time that Daisy would appear in "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" in some way, shape, or form, and it turns out they were correct. Indeed, it's obvious that Nintendo is already looking ahead to the next animated "Mario" movie, which we now know will feature Daisy. Notably, however, the character doesn't speak here, so we'll just have to wait and see which superstar actor ends up voicing her. In the meantime, you can check out "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," which is currently in theaters.
