What Tech Jacket From Invincible Season 4 Looks Like In Real Life
Spoilers for "Invincible" season 4, episode 5 ahead.
The war against the Viltrumite Empire is finally underway in "Invincible," with Nolan Grayson (J.K. Simmons) and Allen the alien (Seth Rogen) arriving on Earth to recruit Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) into the war effort, and also to join their merry band of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" reenactors. This makes sense, of course. What better ally to kill Viltrumites than a half-Viltrumite and Earth's mightiest hero?
More surprisingly, perhaps, is Allen's next choice for a recruit: Zoe Thompson, aka Tech Jacket. We actually met Tech Jacket in season 3, where she fought in the war against the alternate Invincibles, where she managed to kill and defeat Mustachible in a battle. Tech Jacket has no powers, but she does have an extremely advanced alien battle suit that grants her super strength, flight, energy beams, and even regeneration. The character is like Blue Beetle from DC Comics mixed with Ben 10 and Spider-Man.
Tech Jacket is one of "Invincible" creator Robert Kirkman's oldest superheroes, having debuted a few months before Mark Grayson. In the comics, Tech Jacket is a human boy named Zack who finds a dying alien in a crashed spaceship. Knowing he's about to die, but realizing Zack will be caught up in his ship's explosion, the alien grants Zack his suit, saving his life and turning him into one of the most powerful superheroes on Earth.
In the TV adaptation of "Invincible," Tech Jacket is played by Zoey Deutch. Though we don't see Deutch's face in the show, since it's animated, her voice might be familiar if you've seen her in other roles — like in the endlessly rewatchable "Set It Up," co-starring Glen Powell.
Zoey Deutch has fought zombies and now alien conquerors
The daughter of director Howard Deutch and "Back to the Future" star Lea Thompson, Zoey Deutch made her debut on TV in the 2010s with roles in "Ringer" and "The Suite Life on Deck."
Her breakout came starring opposite Glen Powell in both Richard Linklater's excellent "Everybody Wants Some!!" and the Netflix rom-com "Set It Up." But it was with "Zombieland: Double Tap" that Deutch got her first role in a blockbuster box office hit. In that movie, Deutch played Madison, a woman who has survived the zombie apocalypse by living inside a mall since she was 14.
More recently, Deutch starred opposite Toni Collette and Nicholas Hoult in Clint Eastwood's "Juror #2," an intense courtroom drama that felt like the kind of movie we just don't get anymore. As a voice actor, Deutch had a guest role in the adult animated comedy "Fairfax" about hypebeast culture in Los Angeles.
"Invincible" has been known to attract quite an impressive number of celebrities for its voice roles. Among the main cast, we find Walton Goggins, Sandra Oh, J. K. Simmons, Gillian Jacobs, Zachary Quinto, Seth Rogen, Tatiana Maslany and many more. The show finds a good balance of celebrity stunt casting and veteran voice actors like John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, Troy Baker, and Eric Bauza, who seamlessly disappear into their roles.
As for Deutch as Tech Jacket, it is important to note that Tech Jacket does have his own short-lived comic series. Whenever "Invincible" finishes adapting Robert Kirman's main comic, there is already a blueprint for a spin-off.
