Independence Day: Resurgence

Release Date: June 24

It’s been 20 years since aliens attacked Earth in Independence Day, and the same amount of time has passed within the confines of the narrative. This time the aliens are coming back with bigger and better hardware, and they’re pissed. But they probably weren’t expecting us to have adopted their technology to advance our own weapons and vehicles to take them on when they come back. There’s no Will Smith this time, which makes us a little less excited, but Jeff Goldblum is back, and that’s good enough for us.

the BFG trailer

Release Date: July 1

Steven Spielberg knows how to craft an adventure centered featuring talented youngsters. Whether it’s E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, War of the Worlds, Jurassic Park or Empire of the Sun, Spielberg just knows how to pull incredible performances out of young actors. With The BFG not only are we getting a new young actress (Ruby Barnhill) working with Spielberg, but the director is also re-teaming with Bridge of Spies Oscar winner Mark Rylance and returning to family film territory for the first time since Hook (though you could maybe count The Adventures of Tintin as a family film). That’s something to be excited about.

Ghostbusters - group

Release Date: July 15

This is probably the most divisive blockbuster hitting theaters this summer, and even if this movie is average, it’s not going to be enough to stop the naysayers from speaking ill of it. Even though we’re skeptical if this reboot of the classic paranormal comedy will actually work, we’re still hoping for the best, if only because it would be great to have another great Ghostbusters movie again, even if it’s without the original characters. Plus, there’s also the chance that there might be some kind of connection to the original franchise in some way. But we won’t find out until this summer.

Star Trek Beyond

Release Date: July 22

This is the first time we’ll be getting a movie in the rebooted Star Trek franchise that doesn’t have J.J. Abrams behind the camera. Instead it will be Fast and Furious 6 director Justin Lin taking us deep into the final frontier. Having a new director on board could be just as risky as it is exciting, but with Simon Pegg, a true Trekkie, co-writing the script, we’re hoping this is something that both Star Trek fans and general audiences will find enjoyable this summer.

Jason Bourne Trailer

Jason Bourne

Release Date: July 29

You know his name, but there seems to be much more that Jason Bourne doesn’t know about his past with the shady organization known as Treadstone. The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum director Paul Greengrass is back with Matt Damon for the sequel, a reunion that we never thought would happen after the third film in the franchise ended with such finality. However, after the slog that was The Bourne Legacy, we’re pretty pumped to see Matt Damon back in action as Jason Bourne again, especially in a post-Snowden world.
