Everything We Know About Twilight Of The Gods, Zack Snyder's Animated Norse Mythology Saga

Zack Snyder has been a busy boy since his guardianship of the DC movie universe came to an end following principal photography on "Justice League." Though he eventually returned to finish his version of that film, the multi-hyphenate filmmaker has since settled in firmly at Netflix and is focusing on original stories rather than pre-existing franchises. Among these projects is "Twilight of the Gods," a 2D animated action series based on Norse mythology.

The project marks another return to Snyder's filmmaking roots. He made his feature directorial debut in 2004 with the very well-received remake of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead," and his first project for Netflix was the Las Vegas-set undead action horror "Army of the Dead." Snyder's second feature-length film debuted back in 2006 and secured his status as a rising talent to watch: the epic historical war movie "300," inspired by the legendary Battle of Thermopylae. "Twilight of the Gods" will see Snyder return to the ancient world.

This time, though, he's going beyond god-kings and oracles and embracing a true pantheon wholeheartedly, with Odin, Loki, and Thor among the characters featured in "Twilight of the Gods." Here's everything we know so far about the animated series.

The creative team behind Twilight of the Gods

Zack and Deborah Snyder's production company, The Stone Quarry, is teaming up with Oscar-nominated French animation studio Xilam for "Twilight of the Gods." Established as a producer of children's entertainment like "Oggy and the Cockroaches" and "Shuriken School," Xilam branched out into animation for adults in 2019 with "I Lost My Body," an R-rated fantasy drama about a severed hand going on a journey to reunite with its owner. The film won numerous accolades and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2020 Academy Awards.

"Twilight of the Gods" was co-created by Snyder, veteran DC Animated Universe director Jay Oliva, and "Supergirl" writer Eric Carrasco. Snyder and Oliva will both direct episodes, with Carrasco also serving as producer.

In a statement announcing the collaboration with Stone Quarry, Xilam founder and CEO Marc du Pontavice said:

"We'll be utilising state of the art 2D animation across the series, which will include spectacular battles and special effects in the distinctive style that has characterised Zack's work throughout his illustrious career. This project also marks a significant step forward in our ambitions to bring our expertise into the world of adult action series for global audiences."

Who's in the Twilight of the Gods cast?

Netflix announced the stacked voice cast for "Twilight of the Gods" back in 2021, alongside character names that indicate we'll see the Norse gods tangling with human affairs. The deities include John Noble as the voice of Odin, Paterson Joseph as Loki, Jamie Chung as Hel, and Pilou Asbæk as Thor. Jamie Clayton, who played Pinhead in 2022's "Hellraiser," will apparently be taking on another ethereal role; her character is referred to as the "seid-kona," a term meaning witch or magic woman. Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju, best known for playing Tormund Giantsbane in "Game of Thrones," will provide the voice of Andvari, who in Norse mythology is a shapeshifting dwarf with a magic ring.

Corey Stoll is voicing Hrafnkel, a major figure from the Norse sagas who may be connected to Lauren Cohan's character, Inge (in mythology, Hrafnkel is a devoted worshipper of the god Freyr, who is also known as Yngvi). The rest of the cast includes Rahul Kohli as Egill, Stuart Martin as Leif, Sylvia Hoeks as Sigrid, and Peter Stormare as Ulfr.

"Twilight of the Gods" doesn't yet have a release date, but we'll bring you more news on the project as production continues.
