Donald Glover Is Ready To Lay On The Charm Again As Star Wars' Lando Calrissian
One thing we already know about Donald Glover is that the man is charming. In fact, that's where our love for him began, especially if you're a Childish Gambino or "Community" fan. It should come as no surprise that Glover knows he has that quality in spades — and that he's interested in using it to return to a beloved "Star Wars" character.
In a video for GQ where he "breaks down his most iconic characters," Glover explains that he would love to play the legendary Lando Calrissian again. He went on to remind viewers that the original Lando, Billy Dee Williams, previously taught him "the secret" to playing the character is just to turn on the charm. He told the outlet:
"Lando is charm incarnate, which, you know, he's kind of a maverick, which I don't think there's a lot of anymore. It's hard to be the smooth talker nowadays, 'cause like, where's the line? But I think that's also where the danger is, it's like how close can you get without tripping over it? I mean, I would love to play Lando again. It's a fun time to be him. It just has to be the right way to do it. I'm all about, like, now, time is precious. I think everybody the past couple years, this pandemic s*** really had people experience time in a way where they're like, 'well why am I...I should be around oranges!"
Could the Lando show still be happening?
Funnily enough, the "Swarm" creator was sitting in an orange grove during the video. To make things a bit juicier, Glover also teased that he and Disney are currently discussing a new project that would include his return as Lando—though he noted it would have to really strike his fancy in order to participate. He explained:
"People kind of realize that their time is valuable, you only get so much. So, I'm not interested in doing anything that's just going to be a waste of my time or just a paycheck. I'd much rather spend time with people I enjoy. So it just has to be the right thing, which I think it could be. I mean, Lando is definitely somebody I'd like to hang out with. So, I mean, we're [Glover and Disney] talking about it. That's as much as I can say without Kathleen Kennedy [president of Lucasfilms] hunting me down."
Yes, that's the sound of "Star Wars" stans rejoicing the world over, as the once-discussed Lando Disney+ series appears to still be secretly in development as per Glover's comments. It still was as per Kennedy in the spring of 2022, but projects can fall through the cracks at any point. That said, it could be something completely different that the pair are cooking up for Lando—and the possibilities are vast — but either way, it'll be great to see Glover return to a role that he totally nailed. It's just good to hear that the "Star Wars" universe isn't quite done with him yet — and that he's not done with it, either.
