Doom Patrol Season 4: Release Date, Cast, And More For The Offbeat DC Superhero Show's Return

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

One of the most offbeat superhero shows to date, "Doom Patrol" has solidified itself among the best the genre has to offer. The zany antics of the titular superhero team have been a delight for fans ever since its debut on the now-defunct DC Universe service (they now live on HBO Max). However, above all else, "Doom Patrol" is a show that is inherently centered on the emotional journeys of its main characters. From the talented ensemble cast to the brain-frying narrative that surrounds them, the series looks to continue its hot streak with the imminent fourth season.

After an eventful, time-travel-filled third season, the next episodes will be building upon all of that while doubling down on the general craziness. The returning cast members will be joined by new ones, even zanier than the last. And don't take on my word for it, either. A full-length trailer, plot details, and more tease the biggest season of "Doom Patrol" yet.

Check out the trailer

Previously on "Doom Patrol," Rita Farr (April Bowlby) was finally able to forgive Laura De Mille (Michelle Gomez) in the finale after some convoluted time-travel shenanigans tore up the team from the ground up. Cliff Steele (Brendan Fraser) was no longer in his bronze metal body, instead commanding a giant robot. Jane (Diane Guerrero) reluctantly relinquished her host priority to Dr. Harrison to ensure the personas would remain alive and well. It all ended with the group finally coming to terms with their responsibility as superheroes, forging a path to becoming a full-fledged Doom Patrol.

In the season 4 trailer, Cliff is back in his original Robotman body and the rest of the team seems more focused than ever on being an actual superhero team. The introduction of Madame Rouge turned "Doom Patrol" upside down last time around, but she is now a member of the crew. Victor Stone (Joivan Wade) is no longer a cyborg, which means he now has to wrestle with being a hero with no super abilities. Meanwhile, General Immortus, a longtime Doom Patrol villain connected to Niles Caulder's previous obsession with immortality, is heavily teased in the early footage.

In the upcoming fourth season, the team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all which is more important: their own happiness or the fate of the world? Join series stars Brendan Fraser, Diane Guerrero, April Bowlby, Joivan Wade, and Michelle Gomez for an exclusive discussion and first look of the upcoming season.

Where and when you can watch it

Much like its close relative, "Doom Patrol" is no longer streaming on the DC Universe streaming service. Instead, the upcoming season will be available to stream on HBO Max on December 8. The first two episodes will air the first week while the rest will come out weekly until taking a mid-season break on January 5, 2023. The latter half of the 12-episode season will then release later in 2023 on an unspecified date.

If you haven't seen them already, or want to rewatch them, you can also catch up on all three previous seasons on its new streaming home. Thanks to the mid-season break, there will be plenty of time to do so, too. "Titans" is going the same route by splitting up its season, so it seems it will be a recurring theme from now on.

An expanded cast

In addition to the previously mentioned cast members, Matt Bomer and Mark Sheppard are set to reprise their roles as Larry Trainor and Willoughby Kipling. Unfortunately, there is no sign that Timothy Dalton will return as Niles Caulder after he bit the dust early last season. However, Abi Monterey, who plays Caulder's daughter, Dorothy Spinner, is set to make an appearance. And, most importantly, the deadly butts will be getting their vengeance after the Doom Patrol kicked their you-know-whats last season. The returning cast and crew are enough to excite anyone, but there are also a few new faces this time around.

"Twin Peaks" alum Madeline Zima has joined the series as Casey Brinke, a superhero named Space Case who debuted during Gerard Way's comic run of "Doom Patrol." In the source material, she was created by Danny the Street and became a member of the titular superhero team. Elijah Rashad Reed has been cast as Deric, a robotics teacher and former best friend of Victor Stone who is mysteriously pulled back into his life. Last but not least, "Heroes" star Sendhil Ramamurthy will appear as Mr. 104, a powerful villain with the ability to morph his body into any element.

The first part of "Doom Patrol" season 4 will premiere on HBO Max on December 8.
