Horror Soundtracks

Horror movies often live or die by their scores, as the music showcased throughout a film frequently serves as its own character. The sounds of creeping dread can be essential to building the world of a horror film. In some instances, the sound of a horror movie score is just as effective and enjoyable without having to watch anything happening on screen. Music is such a vital element in crafting all films, but horror especially boasts some of the all-time great movie scores. The sound of a screeching violin can make your hair stand on end and a continuous deep thump of percussion can influence your heartbeat. Fortunately, this year birthed a bevy of fantastic new additions to the horror movie score library, including "The Black Phone," Nia DaCosta's "Candyman," "The Menu," David Bruckner's "Hellraiser," and Jordan Peele's "Nope," all available on vinyl. The latter is especially fantastic, as the gatefold artwork was provided by a teenager Peele found on Instagram. It's the holiday season, so there's no better time to gift soundtracks to some festive movies and a holiday special. Keep things chilling with the "Krampus" score composed by Douglas Pipes ("Trick 'R Treat"), or get cheery in a Charles Dickens fashion with the music from "A Muppet Christmas Carol," including the broken-hearted ballad "When Love Is Gone," performed by Scrooge's lost love and even a bonus a version by the acclaimed artist Martina McBride. Movies Turned into Musicals

Turning movies into musicals is all the rage lately, and here are the soundtracks for some of the more recent hit stage productions adding some Broadway flair to some beloved films. With such a focus on original songs, the "Once" soundtrack wonderfully expands the music from the indie darling that introduced us to Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Meanwhile, the rock-based "Almost Famous" has the task of creating a bunch of songs for the Cameron Crowe movie without relying on the familiar soundtrack of rock favorites. Finally, you can go back in time with the musical soundtrack for the stage production of "Back to the Future" starring Roger Bart as Doc Brown. (Ethan Anderton)

Everything Else

ABKCO

Here are a handful of soundtracks that aren't exactly from movies or TV shows, but they're adjacent to some familiar titles or names. First, there's the soundtrack to the "Guardians of the Galaxy" video game from last year, which features both music from the fictional '80s heavy metal group Star-Lord Band and the video game score composed by Richard Jacques. The retro arcade music of NYC-based chiptune punk band Anamanaguchi makes the "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World" arcade-style game a lot of fun. And there's a tribute to the legendary John Carpenter, combining some of his best musical atmospheres with guests like Claudio Simonetti (Goblin), Leather Strip, Motion Kapture, Ketvector, as well as artists of the New Retro Wave scene such as Code Elektro, Tibia, and Simulakrum Lab. (Ethan Anderton)

"The Mummy" and "Romancing the Stone"

Taking a cue from classic monster movies and grocery store romance novels, we have two prints for "The Mummy" and "Romancing the Stone," two films that bring classic adventure to life in different ways. Nate Gonzales' print for the Brendan Fraser vehicle is inspired by the movie posters that used to adorn beautiful movie houses so many decades ago. Meanwhile, Nick Charge's "Romancing the Stone" print has the hazy, illustrated look of a novel that will get things steamy for your mother or aunt. 

"A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Lighthouse"

On the more twisted side of cinematic imagery, we've got these posters for "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Lighthouse." Freddy Krueger's sharp, gloved hand is made gigantic in Adam Rabalais' poster design that takes a cue from the famous "Jaws" poster. Meanwhile, "The Lighthouse" is almost made sentient in Melvin's Mago's print, which gives the titular location a coat and hat, complete with an ominous seagull perched on the head and the tentacles of an octopus wrapping around its shoulders.

"Scream" and "The Exorcist"

It's an excellent day for an exorcism in Rich Davies' poster for the classic horror film "The Exorcist," which finds the priest climbing the stairs that will lead him to quite the horrifying experience. But that's not all that Davies has for horror fans, because he's also put together a more traditional poster for the original "Scream," assembling all of the key cast members around the signature Ghostface killer. 

"Mission: Impossible" and "Predator"

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to grab this print for the original 1996 "Mission: Impossible" movie. Artist Yvan Quinet's print for the action blockbuster brings together the Impossible Mission Force on top of a file inspired by the computer files seen in the then-timely technology. Thankfully, there's no Jon Voight to be seen, but Henry Czerny as Kittridge makes a little appearance. On the other hand, you could take on a different kind of mission by picking up this muddy print for "Predator" by artist Chris Koehler. C'mon! Do it now!

"The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "Batman Returns"

Now is a good time to remind you that Tim Burton didn't direct "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Though it's very much based on a story idea by Burton and he also produced the movie, it's actually stop-motion master Henry Selick who brought this movie to life. This print by Jeff Kepler (aka Seventh Voyage) features Jack Skellington (and his trusty ghost dog Zero) in all his Sandy Claws glory before he eventually gets blasted out of the sky by the authorities. However, Tim Burton did give us another fantastic Christmas movie in the DC Comics sequel "Batman Returns," and Catwoman takes the spotlight in this fantastic composition of illustrations from artist Rich Davies.

"Kill Bill" in the style of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Evil Dead"

Wow! Who would have thought that both volumes of Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" could be perfectly represented with remixed posters of horror classics? Inspired by "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Evil Dead," these two prints by Chris Koehler and Benedict Woodhead (respectively) take memorable scenes from "Kill Bill" and perfectly repurpose them with similar imagery from those original horror posters. This is exactly the kind of movie mash-up art that I love. Get them together as a set or buy them individually as Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.

"X-Men: The Animated Series" and "Jurassic Park"

Let's take a turn into the realm of comic books. First, Julien Rico Jr. has delivered a bright and colorful print featuring the '90s animated mutants from "X-Men: The Animated Series." For me, this is the definitive version of the X-Men, and this is a great tribute to the main roster of characters. Then we have some artistic liberties taken with "Jurassic Park" by turning the blockbuster Steven Spielberg film into an old school "Weird Science" comic book, created by artist Danny Schlitz.

"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" and "The Wizard of Oz"

We're not in Kansas anymore. Things are getting weird, especially with these prints for "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" and the all-time great classic "The Wizard of Oz." The Mondo print for the Weird Al movie from artist JJ Harrison recreates a scene from the parody movie that's actually based on Yankovic's real life, where he recorded his first song in a public bathroom. Meanwhile, Ape Meets Girl's print combines the classic sepia tone of Kansas with the technicolor of Oz, as Dorothy steps out from her transported farmhouse into a magical but dangerous world. 

Grover and Kermit and Vincent Price

In these adorable prints, a couple familiar Muppets share a moment with two very different counterparts. Glen Brogan's print imagines Grover as an aged author signing copies of the classic "Sesame Street" book "The Monster at the End of This Book." Meanwhile, Barret Chapman's artwork celebrates a moment from "The Muppet Show" where Kermit the Frog and horror legend Vincent Price pretend to be vampires. 

"Raiders of the Lost Ark"

"That belongs in a museum." Indiana Jones is always on the hunt for spectacular artifacts, and many of those artifacts deserve to be preserved in pop culture. That's exactly what artist Robin Springett does with this print. Along with Indy's hat and whip, you'll noticed some familiar items from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," including some bad dates. What's great about this print is it's actually just one in a series of prints with the same style. "Top Gun"

It might be a simple design, but this "Top Gun" print by Dave O'Flanagan perfectly captures the sunset vibe of the high-flying classic from 1986. The poster manages to fit in a jet, a shirtless Val Kilmer with a volleyball, and Tom Cruise speeding on his motorcycle, and even if it features the less desirable floating head design, I consider this a win.

The Batmobile

If Michael Keaton is your Batman, then this is your Batmobile, and it's speeding towards a face-off with The Joker. Derek Payne created this piece, which pays tribute to the 1989 version of the Dark Knight's ride from Tim Burton's "Batman." It almost has an anime quality to it, with the lines of color flying in the background, giving the vehicle a tremendous amount of speed. 

"Last Action Hero"

One of the most famous paintings in the world is "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper, and even if you think you've never seen it before, the artwork above should refresh your memory of what it roughly looks like. However, this is a pop culture remix of the painting, featuring the characters of "Last Action Hero." In fact, this print by artist Casey Callender is just one of many that put a cinematic spin on the "Nighthawks" painting.
