'What We Do In The Shadows' TV Series Headed To FX

After being teased for years, the What We Do in the Shadows TV series is finally a go. FX has ordered a pilot from creators Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, based on the 2014 mockumentary about a group of vampires sharing a flat in New Zealand.

Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, directors and co-stars of the hilarious horror-comedy What We Do in the Shadows, have seemingly been talking about a TV series based on the film ever since the movie's initial release. Last year, Waititi, who also directed Thor: Ragnarok, confirmed that there were still plans for a TV series. Now, it's official: The Hollywood Reporter confirms that FX has ordered a pilot that will reboot the film for TV. Per THR, Clement and Waititi will executive produce alongside Scott Rudin (The Night Of, The Newsroom), Paul Simms (Flight of the Conchords, Atlanta) and Scott Rudin Productions' Garrett Basch and Eli Bush.

The original film, which focused on a group of vampires, played by Clement, Waititi, Jonathan Brugh and Cori Gonzalez-Macuer, all dwelling together under one roof. The What We Do in the Shadows TV series will reboot the same concept with a new cast: Kayvan Novak (Danger Mouse), Matt Berry (Toast of London), Natasia Demetriou (Year Friends) and Harvey Guillen (The Internship). The series will consist of half-hour episodes. There's no word on where the series will take place – the original film was set in New Zealand, but one presumes the FX series will likely update the story to America. When Waititi mentioned the possible series last year, he mentioned the U.S.-angle of the series, saying "We're trying to develop a U.S. version of What We Do in the Shadows. You know, set here in the states, but a TV show."

FX is known for offering creative flexibility for their shows, and their previous vampire series The Strain has recently come to an end, opening up room for a whole new bloodsucking venture. This isn't the only What We Do in the Shadows-related project on the horizon. Wellington Paranormal, a spin-off TV series focusing on characters from the original film, is coming to New Zealand TV in mid-2018. Meanwhile, Clement and Waititi are slowly working on a What We Do in the Shadows sequel called We're Wolves, which will focus on werewolf characters from the first film. "We're still trying to write that. We're doing those [other shows] as well as trying to come up with ideas for this werewolf movie," Waititi said last year. "It will happen!"

What We Do in the Shadows is a great horror-comedy, and its very format lends itself perfectly to a TV reboot. The only thing I remain skeptical about is the cast. The film's cast was perfect, and it's going to be hard to recreate that chemistry with new actors. Of course, there's a good chance the series will bring a completely new energy and take on the material.
