'Sicario' And 'Ex Machina' Snag PGA Nominations; 'Carol' And 'Room' Overlooked

There are years when the awards race feels all but locked in by early January, when even the most casual Oscar followers can rattle off a list of frontrunners and the ceremonies themselves promise few surprises. This is not one of those years. True, there are a few titles that you can safely bet on making it to the final cut, like Spotlight and The Revenant. But there are a great many films still on the bubble. Some of them got good news today, as the PGA announced their nominations for the 2016 awards, and others just saw their odds get a little bit longer. Read the full PGA Awards nominations 2016 list after the jump.

Let's start with the good. Mad Max: Fury Road and Straight Outta Compton are still gaining momentum, after getting some recognition from the Screen Actors Guild, while Sicario and Ex Machina have emerged as two of the more pleasant surprises on this year's list. On the flip side, critical faves Room and Carol were left out. And if you were wondering whether Star Wars might get its shot at awards-season glory this year, the answer is no. Or not from the PGA, at any rate.

That doesn't mean all hope is lost for those films – or, for that matter, for TrumboThe Danish GirlBeasts of No Nation, or Steve Jobs, none of which were recognized either. But the PGA and the Academy have chosen the same winner every year since 2007. In fact, for as long as the PGA Awards have existed, no film has ever won the Best Picture Oscar without first scoring a PGA nomination. Could this be the year that changes? Maybe! Life is full of plot twists. But really, probably not.

Scroll down for the full PGA Awards nominations 2016 list, including the TV categories (spoiler alert: the PGA liked this season of True Detective, and still doesn't care for superheroes), and then update your Oscar pools accordingly.
