'Interstellar' Trailer: Christopher Nolan Saves The World By Looking Above It

The first full trailer for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar is now online. And it is excellent.

Starring Matthew McConaughey, the film shows us a world where food is becoming scarce. So a small group of explorers heads to the heavens in an attempt to solve mankind's ultimate problem. Co-stars include Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway, Casey Affleck and Michael Caine, among others.

This new Interstellar trailer suggests a surprisingly emotional story of a father's love for his daughter, and the incredible lengths he'll go to to save her. Then, we actually get to see lots of Nolan's vision of space, which looks like a lyrical, beautiful place.

Tears. Literal tears came to my face watching that trailer. Part of it was the score, part of it was seeing Christopher Nolan's vision of space, but most of it was the reason Nolan wants us to cry. Interstellar might be about space, but really it's about a father who leaves his daughter – someone he loves more than anything – to try and save both her and the world.

It seems obvious now that Chastain plays Murphy, the daughter, still on Earth years later as her father explores the cosmos. That structure lends itself to some big emotional moments, which could be bolstered by the big special effects and spectacle we've come to expect from Nolan. After the cold films he's completed in the last few years, it's pretty obvious the director wanted something to tug at the heart strings while also give us huge scope. In Interstellar, he may have found just that.

What did you think of the Interstellar trailer? Were you surprised to see how grounded it was? How much of the film, do you think, takes place on Earth? Interstellar opens November 7.
