Genndy Tartakovsky Returning For 'Hotel Transylvania 3'; TV Series To Air On Disney Channel In 2017

Hotel Transylvania 2 was another hit for Sony Animation, raking in over $100M more than the first film. Despite the success of the sequel, director Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) wasn't interested in making another installment. Tartakovsky was ready to move on from the series, to try new things. But it looks like the director has had a change of heart because it's been confirmed he'll return for the next Hotel Transylvania film.

Below, learn more about Hotel Transylvania 3.

As expected, Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, and Andy Samberg are coming back for the sequel as well. This time around, Sandler did not work on the script. The Hollywood Reporter says Michael McCullers (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) wrote Hotel Transylvania 3. In a comment to the outlet, Tartakovsky explains his reasoning for directing Hotel Transylvania 3:

I thought I was done exploring the world of Hotel Transylvania after the first two films, but while I was away from the franchise finishing my TV show Samurai Jack, an idea sparked that I got really excited about and made it irresistible to return and helm myself this third adventure.

Originally, Tartakovsky was disinterested in another sequel because he has "a lot of other ideas," and that he wants to "express them and have them come out." The director also sounded a little frustrated with the process of making Hotel Transylvania 2:

Making a sequel is always difficult. Right away, you have something that was successful and now you have to make sure you aren't going to ruin it. Collaboration is great, but sometimes collaboration is hard. You see it one way, but [screenwriters] Adam [Sandler] and Rob [Smigel] see it another way. You have a lot of people with a lot of say and power and sometimes that makes it more difficult. We also re-did the story a bunch of times to get it right. In the first script, we had the main villain as a real estate agent. I'm an animation snob and it was hard to imagine that, in this great world of monsters, our main character was a real estate agent. We went through and put up the whole story with him, and it was obvious it wasn't working.

In addition to the Tartakovsky-directed Hotel Transylvania 2, audiences will see more of this monster-filled world next year. In 2015, Sony Pictures Animation announced they were developing a Hotel Transylvania TV series, which will air on the Disney Channel. Scheduled for 2017, Hotel Transylvania: The Television Series revolves around Dracula's daughter Mavis (Gomez) teen years.

Hotel Transylvania 3 opens in theaters September 21st, 2018.
