Marvel Announces All Female 'Avengers' Comic

Marvel is really changing up the roster of one of its major teams, using the new Secret Wars event to create an all-female Avengers team called A-Force. (Yeah, the name is pretty terrible.) The line-up will feature a roster of characters including She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa, and Nico Minoru, with at least one new cosmic hero called Singularity. This isn't the first all-female team in Marvel's history — far from it, in fact — but it is getting a mainstream promo push unlike anything Marvel has done with other teams in the past.

A-Force will be from Ms. Marvel writer G. Willow Wilson and Marguerite Bennett, with art by X-Men's Jorge Molina.

Wilson told Mashable,

We've purposefully assembled a team composed of very different characters from disparate parts of the Marvel U, with very different power sets, identities and ideologies. They'll all have to come together to answer some big questions: What would you sacrifice to succeed? What is being a hero worth?

As with other big character changes in Marvel Comics, such as the introduction of a female Thor, one question is how this might affect the film lineup. Given that we know what Marvel Studios is doing for the next few years, the effect will likely be minimal. But this does represent Marvel's response to an ever-increasing female comics readership, and that is something that will certainly make its way to the big screen eventually.

Here's the first major promo art for the title.
