Harriet The Spy: Release Date, Cast And More

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)

"Harriet the Spy" made waves as the first theatrical movie produced by Nickelodeon. But the film adaptation took a lot of liberties with the original 1964 novel by Louise Fitzhugh. However, it looks like a new animated series adaptation from Apple TV+ is being a little more loyal to the source material, giving off the vibe of an animated production from the 1990s, with a mix of Wes Anderson and the graphic novels on which "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" was based. Find out everything we know about the "Harriet the Spy" animated series below.

Harriet the Spy Release Date and Where to Watch It

"Harriet the Spy" is slated to debut exclusively on Apple TV+ starting on November 19, 2021. The series will join other family friendly fare like "The Snoopy Show" and "Ghostwriter." This looks like a stylish addition to the line-up, and it reminds me of the kind of animated programming that made Nickelodeon great in their rise to prominence in the 1990s.

What is Harriet the Spy?

"Harriet the Spy" is a new animated series based on Louise Fitzhugh's book series of the same name. Here's the synopsis of the original book published back in 1964:

"Harriet M. Welsch is a spy. In her notebook, she writes down everything she knows about everyone, even her classmates and her best friends. Then Harriet loses track of her notebook, and it ends up in the wrong hands. Before she can stop them, her friends have read the always truthful, sometimes awful things she's written about each of them. Will Harriet find a way to put her life and her friendships back together?"

That story played out in the live-action "Harriet the Spy" movie as well, so it's not clear if we'll see that narrative play out in the animated series. But with other books in the series, there are plenty of stories that could be used in the series, and there may even be some original storytelling in play too. Plus, this series has an entirely different vibe since it's set in 1960s New York, the same time period in which the first books were published.

Harriet the Spy Cast

"Harriet the Spy" features the voice of Beanie Feldstein ("Booksmart," "Lady Bird") as the titular character, while Jane Lynch will be voicing her nanny and mentor Ole Golly. Meanwhile, Lacey Chabert ("Mean Girls") is voicing Harriet's school nemesis, Marion Hawthorne.

Additional voices include Kimberly Brooks, Crispin Freeman, Grey Griffin, Bumper Robinson and Charlie Schlatter.

Harriet the Spy Showrunner, Writer, and More

"Harriet the Spy" is written and executive produced by Will McRobb, creator of "The Adventures of Pete & Pete," which explains the 1990s Nickelodeon vibe of the series. It's also produced by Sidney Clifton, who previously worked on the "Black Panther" animated series and "Me, Eloise."

The series is produced by The Jim Henson Company, with Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford acting as executive producers on behalf of the company. John W. Hyde, Nancy Steingard and Wendy Moss-Klein are also serving as executive producers with Terissa Kelton acting as co-executive producer. Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski and Ben Kalina are also executive producing for Titmouse Animation Studios.

Harriet the Spy Trailer and Synopsis

Here's the official synopsis for "Harriet the Spy" from Apple TV+:

Outspoken and perpetually curious. That's 11-year-old Harriet in a nutshell. But if she's going to be Harriet M. Welsch, future writer, she'll need to know everything. And to know everything means she'll need to spy...on everyone.
