Now that Arrested Development season 5 is but a distant, unpleasant memory, it's time to look forward to Jason Bateman's other Netflix series. That would be Ozark, a dark drama that I must confess I have yet to watch. I've heard positive things, though, and this new Ozark season 2 trailer is enticing enough that I might check out season 1 very soon. There's a lot going on here, but it's all vague enough to keep things spoiler-free. The running theme here seems to be that this season will ramp up the tension, and things will only grow more and more unpleasant for the main characters.

Bateman told Deadline that season 2 shouldn't so much be considered a new season, but rather a sequel. "We're approaching [Ozark] as a 10-chapter movie... the second year is not a completely new story," the actor said, "but it is another single beginning, middle, and end."

The show focuses on a Chicago financial advisor (Bateman), who has been laundering money for a drug kingpin, and who must quickly uproot his wife (Laura Linney) and kids and move the operation to The Ozarks, after his partner is caught cheating the business. In season 1, Bateman's character "bumps heads with both a local drug dealer whose business he inadvertently interrupts, and a clan of ruffians, led by their 19-year-old niece, who want his money, all the while avoiding the eye of a tenacious FBI agent. He must complete his laundering, to save the life of his family, as they struggle to find their own path in this seemingly foreign way of life."

Season 2 "continues to follow Marty Bryde and his family as they navigate the murky waters of life within a dangerous drug cartel. With Del out, the crime syndicate sends their ruthless attorney Helen Pierce to town to shake things up just as The Byrdes are finally settling in. Marty and Wendy struggle to balance their family interests amid the escalating dangers presented by their partnerships with the power-hungry Snells, the cartel and their new deputy, Ruth Langmore, whose father Cade has been released from prison. The stakes are even higher than before and The Byrdes soon realize they have to go all in before they can get out."

Ozark season 2, starring Jason Bateman, Laura Linney, Julia Garner, and Janet McTeer, arrives on Netflix on August 31, 2018.
