The Best TV Shows & Movies Coming To Netflix In July 2018
Summer is upon us, and July is right around the corner. Which means it's time for a whole new slew of movies and TV shows on Netflix. Next month, you can stream Jurassic Park, We Own the Night, Blue Valentine, Her, Scream 4 and many more. Check out the best new TV shows and movies coming to Netflix in July 2018.
Jurassic Park
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is roaring into theaters this year, but you can't beat the original. Steven Spielberg's 1993 Jurassic Park still holds up to day – it's a big, fun, game-changing blockbuster and almost no big studio film since has come close to topping it (I'm serious!). You know the story: a billionaire clones dinosaurs, wants to open an amusement park, brings a bunch of experts to his secret island, and then all hell breaks loose. Dino mayhem follows, all of it scored to one of the best soundtracks of John Williams' acclaimed career. Bonus: Jeff Goldblum, doing Jeff Goldblum things.
We Own The Night
We Own The Night slipped through the cracks when it hit theaters in 2007, but this crime saga from James Gray (The Lost City of Z) is a must-see. Joaquin Phoenix plays a small-time crook who just happens to come from a family of cops (including father Robert Duvall and brother Mark Wahlberg). A tragedy upends Phoenix's life, and he agrees to go undercover to help the police (and his family). The result is a tense, dramatic, brilliantly acted drama that stands above your standard by-the-numbers crime pic.
Blue Valentine
Blue Valentine is a bleak, crushing movie – so you might not be in the mood to watch it. If you are, though, you'll be rewarded with an emotionally resonate, wonderfully acted character drama. Derek Cianfrance chronicles the early days and bitter end of a couple, played by Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. We see the duo as a young couple falling for each other, then we jump into the future, to see them older, as the romance is starting to spiral down the drain. Again: this isn't going to be for everyone, but Blue Valentine is a film worth experiencing.
Her
Spike Jonze's Her is the lovely, melancholy story of a man who falls in love with his phone. It may sound goofy, but Jonze makes it work. Joaquin Phoenix is a lonely guy who installs a futuristic operating system on his devices, and develops a relationship, of sorts, with the A.I. (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). This easily could've tipped into the zone of twee nonsense, and yet it never does. Perhaps because Jonze and his actors always play it straight, and find the humanity within the story.
Scream 4
Scream 4 ended up being Wes Craven's final film, and that alone makes it worth seeing. But while the sequel failed to have the impact of the original Scream, Scream 4 is surprisingly good, and clever. In true Scream-meta style, the film is both a comment on horror sequels and horror reboots. In a sense, this is a horror reboot in which the actors from the original film keep trying to inject themselves into. The movie ends up being clever, and shockingly brutal. Best of all, it ends the Scream franchise on a high-note after the utter mess that was Scream 3.Coming Soon (Date Not Announced)
