'Destination Wedding' Trailer: Winona Ryder And Keanu Reeves Bring Your '90s Fan Fiction To Life

Remember when you first saw 1992's Dracula and were so taken with '90s darlings Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder that you immediately wrote a modern AU fan fiction where the two of them had a meet-cute at an airport on the way to a wedding? No? Just me?

Well, it turns out Destination Wedding director and writer Victor Levin may have read my fan fiction, because he reunites Reeves and Ryder in a romantic-comedy about two disgruntled wedding guests who luckily don't have a missed connection. You can see the '90s dream team reunite in the first Destination Wedding trailer.

Destination Wedding Trailer

It's a pretty exciting time for Keanu and Winona fans. Both actors are undergoing a sort of career renaissance — Reeves as a gruff, stoic action hero in the phenomenally pulpy John Wick movies, and Ryder as the frantic Joyce Byers in Netflix's runaway hit series Stranger Things. So the fact that the two are reuniting at the height at both of their career resurgences couldn't be more exciting. And in a romantic-comedy at that!

Destination Wedding is like a middle finger to those who thought Reeves and Ryder's careers, and the rom-com, were dead. No, all three are very much alive and flourishing in the film helmed by the director of 5 to 7.Destination Wedding follows two cynical wedding guests who meet the only way that you can in a rom-com — by bickering over boarding lines in an airport. The meet-cute of Ryder's Lindsay and Reeves' Frank gets off to a rough start, but the two eventually bond over the course of the wedding weekend, and maybe even fall in love.

"Keanu and Winona are stars for a reason: they have huge talent and skill, and they work very hard," Levin told People, which debuted the trailer. "But they also keep it fun. They rehearsed their dialogue together, helped each other, made everybody laugh — they were delightful. They are the movie. It's about their characters and the healing power of love and laughter."

This isn't the first time Reeves and Ryder have reunited, but this is the first time they have truly headlined a movie together since Dracula. The two co-starred 2006's A Scanner Darkly and 2009's The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.

Here is the synopsis for Destination Wedding via People:

Ryder's Lindsay and Reeves' Frank arrive at a destination wedding only to discover they're the guests no one knows where to put, and are therefore stuck together. Though they hate each other at first, the pessimistic duo start to bond throughout the days-long affair.

Destination Wedding hits theaters on August 24, 2018.
