The Morning Watch: 'Gargoyles' Fan Film, Every Video Game In 'Ready Player One' & More

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, Ready Player One writer Ernest Cline explains every video game reference used in his book, including many that made it into the movie. Plus, see how one fan of the 1990s animated series Gargoyles took it upon himself to create a live-action fan film, and learn about the development and execution of the live musical performances on Saturday Night Live.

Ernest Cline not only wrote the novel on which the movie Ready Player One is based, but he also wrote the screenplay. For Wired, he broke down every single video game featured in his book, why its's important to him and where it's featured in the story. Some of these ended up in the movie as well.

Next, filmmaker and YouTube user Carlos Ferrer made this live-action Gargoyles fan film that brings the animated series from the mid 1990s to life. The tone is very much in the vein of Batman, and while the visual effects could certainly use some work, it's not a bad project for any fans who grew up with the series.

Finally, go behind the scenes of Saturday Night Live to find out how the crew prepares for the live musical performances that happen during each episode. It's amazing to see how quickly these performances come together and what some of the artists were able to do with such a small performance space.
