Kylo Ren And Rey Never Met Before 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens,' According To J.J. Abrams

Even though Star Wars fans in the United States won't be able to get their hands on the Collector's Edition 3D Blu-ray release until November 15th, some fans around the world already have the home video release on shelves. That means some fans have already gotten a chance to listen to the entirety of the director's commentary from J.J. Abrams, instead of just the snippets of information that have been teased. And there appears to be one major revelation providing some new details on Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Rey (Daisy Ridley).

In the scene where Kylo Ren tracks down Rey on Takodana, after she's had the Force vision in Maz Kanata's castle, J.J. Abrams reveals that Kylo Ren never met Rey before Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But does that actually debunk any theories fans have had about Rey's parentage or potential history with Luke Skywalker? Find out after the jump.

This information comes from a fan who already has their copy of the Collector's Edition 3D Blu-ray by way of a Tumblr (via LRM) where he took the time to run through some of the most intriguing details of the commentary. The exact quote from Abrams during the aforementioned scene says:

"One of the new relationships that we were focusing on was between Kylo Ren and Rey. They've never met but he's heard of this girl."

Now some fans have discussed how the reaction that Kylo Ren has to be told about "a girl" helping Finn and BB-8 escape First Order troops could indicate that he knows something about her already. However, I'm of the mind that they're looking into these lines of dialogue too much. This appears to be a situation where he's just pissed that another unknown variable has entered the equation and resulted in not getting the rest of the map to Luke Skywalker in his possession.

This information from J.J. Abrams would seem to debunk any theories that Kylo Ren knows who Rey is before she gets caught up with Finn and BB-8, as well as his father, Han Solo. But then again, just because Kylo Ren and Rey haven't met until their encounter on Takodana doesn't mean Ren couldn't be aware of her existence otherwise.

This could potentially debunk other popular theories that Rey trained at Luke's Jedi Academy when she was very young, or that she's an estranged Solo sibling (the latter being much less likely than the former at this point), but again, just because these characters haven't met doesn't mean those potential theories can't be true. Rey could have easily trained with Luke after Ren turned to the Dark Side and went off with the Knights of Ren, and maybe she was already sent away by the time they returned for the presumed slaughter of Jedi we see in Rey's Force vision.

Perhaps Rey was being trained by Luke in secret because he could sense how powerful she could become, which would explain how easily she picked up her Force abilities in The Force Awakens. That would mean that Kylo Ren would never have met or even known about Rey, and that would make for quite a revelation to the villain.

Of course, there's also the chance that J.J. Abrams was saying that Rey and Kylo Ren never met before now was just in regards to what we've seen happen on screen. He could merely be referencing the fact that they've never met in the movie until now, which is accurate, but maybe not indicative of their history. Abrams has been known to say things that are a bit misleading to keep fans from figuring things out, so it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. Hopefully, we'll find out in Star Wars: Episode VIII.
