'Voyage Of Time' Trailer: Terrence Malick's IMAX Documentary Looks Simply Stunning

It's taken over 30 years, but Terrence Malick's Voyage of Time is finally heading to theaters. Several weeks ago we learned that IMAX had set the 40-minute edit of his documentary, narrated by Brad Pitt, for a fall release, and today the first trailer has arrived to show us what wonders wait in store for us. Check out the first Voyage of Time trailer below.

Voyage of Time hasn't been around quite as long as the cosmos itself, but it has been in the works for a long long time. Back in the 1970s Malick began work on Q, about the history of the universe and the beginning of life. That project eventually got scrapped, but Malick was able to repurpose some of that footage for Tree of Life and now Voyage of Time. The first Voyage of Time trailer is a stunner, and it also looks a little bit like someone just cut out all the narrative human stuff from Tree of Life.

Two different versions of Voyage of Life exist: a 40-minute IMAX experience narrated by Pitt, and a 90-minute 35mm version narrated by Cate Blanchett. The trailer above is for the shorter IMAX cut, in case you couldn't tell by the fact that Pitt narrates the whole thing. That one lands in IMAX theaters October 7. The longer edit doesn't have a theatrical release date yet.

Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience is a one-of-a-kind celebration of life and the grand history of the cosmos, transporting audiences into a vast yet up-close-and personal journey that spans the eons from the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world ... and beyond. A labor of love from one of American cinema's most acclaimed and visually exciting filmmakers, Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life), Voyage of Time has been nearly four decades in the making and represents the filmmaker's first foray into documentary storytelling. The film's panorama of awe-inspiring images will take you into the heart of monumental events never witnessed — from the birth of the stars and galaxies to the explosion of diverse life-forms on planet earth, including humankind — in immersive new ways that only IMAX can deliver. This is a cosmic experience — a hymn to the glories of nature, life and scientific discovery — in which all the elements come together to form Malick's most original film to date.

Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, a 40-minute, giant-screen adventure narrated by Brad Pitt, which immerses audiences directly into the story of the universe and life itself, will be shown exclusively in IMAX® theatres.
