'Neighbors 2' Clip: In Which Zac Efron's Chiseled Body Gets Greasy For Your Amusement
The first Neighbors was such a pleasant surprise that I can't help but slightly dread Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. After all, you'd need to borrow the hands of your family and friends if you wanted to count every lousy sequel to a great comedy. To its credit, the follow-up to one of 2014's biggest comedies did get the whole gang back together, with stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, and Zac Efron back in front of the camera and director Nicholas Stoller behind it. Is this a case where my dread is misplaced?
Maybe. After all, I did chuckle at the new clip from the film Universal just released, which is a good sign.
Neighbors 2 is the Die Hard 2 of comedy sequels – how could the same thing happen to the same couple twice? This time around, Mac and Kelly (Rogen and Byrne) have to deal with a sorority house moving in next door, causing all manner of havoc and mayhem and what-not. Naturally, they turn to Teddy Sanders (Efron), the former leader of the fraternity they defeated in part one, to help them do battle against their obnoxious new neighbors.
In this clip, our heroes are at some kind of festival and are attempting some kind of plot to sabotage their enemies. The context isn't there, but who needs that when you have a shirtless Zac Efron getting rubbed with a hunk of greasy meat to better showcase his chiseled physique? I don't know about you guys, but I'm still a sucker for Efron's "I'm Incredibly Attractive But Also Completely Stupid" schtick. If the trailers are any indication, we're going to get a lot of that.
I just hope that my favorite aspect of the first film, the delightful pairing between Rogen and Byrne, remains intact. Somehow, a goofy comedy about a husband and wife doing battle with a frat house managed to depict one of my all-time favorite movie marriages, a relationship where both partners had equal say in their actions and truly seemed to dig each other. Neighbors 2 can get away with being a beat-for-beat remake of the first film if it can capture that again.
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising opens on May 20, 2016. Here's the official synopsis:
Now that Mac (Rogen) and Kelly Radner (Byrne) have a second baby on the way, they are ready to make the final move into adulthood: the suburbs. But just as they thought they'd reclaimed the neighborhood and were safe to sell, they learn that the new occupants next door are a sorority even more out of control than Teddy (Efron) and his brothers ever dreamed of being.
Tired of their school's sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have decided to start a house where they can do whatever the hell they want. When Shelby (Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the perfect place just off campus, they won't let the fact that it's located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.
Forced to turn to the one ex-neighbor with the skills to bring down the new Greeks next door, the Radners—alongside best friends Jimmy (Ike Barinholtz) and Paula (Carla Gallo)—bring in charismatic Teddy as their secret weapon. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas' home. But if they think that their neighbors are going down without a fight, they have severely underestimated the power of youthful ingenuity and straight-up crazy.
