'The Good Dinosaur' Clip: Do You Wanna Know How I Got These Scars?

With Thanksgiving just a couple weeks away, we don't have much time before we get our second Pixar Animation film of the year, The Good Dinosaur. Everything we've seen from the prehistoric adventure looks like it packs another fantastic adventure with an unlikely friendship that will make tears come out of our faces.

Now we have a new The Good Dinosaur clip that doesn't get the waterworks flowing, but does show off what an asset Sam Elliott's voice can be. The Big Lebowski and Prancer star plays the tyrannosaurus rex Butch, the patriarch of a family who has seem some scary things in his time, and he tells Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) around a campfire of just how he got that big scar on his face.

Here's The Good Dinosaur clip from Disney UK:

It's amazing to me that up until now Sam Elliott has only used his voice on film for Barnyard and Marmaduke. How has no one tapped this rich resource for more animated movies? He's done tons of commercial work, but animated movies is where this voice belongs. You hang on each and every word he says.

Also, if this scene calls back to the iconic scene in Jaws where Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw) compare battle scars, it wasn't intentional, though director Peter Sohn adores the Steven Spielberg movie. He told us in an interview:

Jaws is one of my favorite movies. If it is, it must be subconsciously out there. But like yeah, it wasn't something we started talking about.

And the scene is important for Arlo and his development out on his own without his parents:

In terms of Arlo's journey, like he really just wants to get out of these issues that he's got in his life. You know, experiencing loss, knowing that he is not as capable as his siblings. That he just wants to be something else. And so he meets T. Rexes that are badasses, that they are brave and they're fighters and they're strong and that he believes that to be like these guys, I just have to get rid of fear. You are the people that I want to become. Like my father. And but then the truth of from these guys are like what are you talking about? You know, I live in fear all the time. You know, and that's part of who we are. You can't get rid of that. That's something that you need to understand. Those ideas of trying to make them be tough guys but also help Arlo learn that it's not about that, you know. It's about trying to find a way through your fears.

For those wondering, that's Steve Zahn and Anna Paquin as Butch's t-rex kids, and they certainly seem like quite a pack to hang around with. If you want to learn more about The Good Dinosaur, be sure to check out our full interview with Peter Sohn and also our extensive feature on what made the movie different from the rest of Pixar's films.

We'll find out how Arlo learns to confront his fears when The Good Dinosaur arrives on November 25th. If you want to see more of the movie, check out the most recent trailer right here.

The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct?  Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo (voice of Raymond Ochoa) makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.
