Marvel Almost Unleashed Grey Hulk In 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'

Just yesterday, we learned that director Joss Whedon ended up cutting what would have been Hulk's best scene from The Avengers: Age of Ultron. While we don't know what the scene entailed for sure, there's a chance it could pop up in another Marvel film sometime down the road. However, it turns out another change to the big guy was also planned for the Marvel sequel. The original plan was for one of the major action sequences to have Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) become Grey Hulk in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

As the trailers and TV spots showed leading up to the release of the film, one of the key action sequences in the film involves Hulk losing control and creating chaos. This forces Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to call upon "Veronica," which is the Archie Comics-inspired codename for the Hulkbuster armor that allows him to try to stop Hulk from going crazy. (Though he still ends up causing quite a bit of destruction in the process.)

As we know, Hulk is more unruly and dangerous as the big guy than he normally is during this sequence because Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) has used her unique powers to mess with Banner's mind. And because Hulk reaches a level of anger and insanity that we haven't seen yet, Marvel was going to have him turn into Grey Hulk. But it didn't happen.

Wired briefly explains what happened with the decision to keep Hulk green:

"Initially, Hulk was actually planned to turn grey when he's angry Hulk in the Hulkbuster sequence but hey, everybody wanted the green guy. So, in the end, ILM just changed his eyes to make them look more sullen when he's under the control of Scarlet Witch."

There's even evidence of this initial plan due to a Grey Hulk Funko POP Vinyl figure (which you can actually still buy) seen with the rest of the adorable versions of the Avengers here:

Bringing in Grey Hulk seems like a little too much fan pandering to me. However, it also may have been something that annoyed fans because Grey Hulk is traditionally a version of Hulk where Banner is much more in control. Grey Hulk even speaks full sentences and is pretty much as articulate as Banner himself. Perhaps seeing Red Hulk would have been a little more appropriate.

Anyway, there are plenty more Marvel movies on the way, so maybe there's still a chance we'll see a different colored version of Hulk sometime down the road.
