Terry Gilliam Again Working To Cast And Shoot 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote'

Here's something we missed earlier this week in the deluge of new project news from the marketplace at Cannes: Terry Gilliam has chosen some new actors for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. This project has been going on and off for nearly fifteen years, and the most recent incarnation had Robert Duvall set to star as Quixote, with Ewan McGregor tentatively set to play the modern-day writer who ends up back in Quixote's time, where the old man mistakes him for Sancho Panza. Those actors are both off the project, but it isn't dead yet. (Or dead again.)

Now there's news that Gilliam and Spanish producer Adrian Guerra are going back into casting for The Man Who Killed Don Quixote.

Variety reports that Gilliam was set to meet with actors this week, and that he and Guerra want to be in production by early 2015. Locations are chosen in the Canary Islands, for starters.

Who might end up in the film? Hard to say at this point, but John Hurt did recently say during a Q&A that he's pretty much got the Quixote role locked if he decides he wants it. And that role is a bit different now, as Gilliam's many rewrites on the film have changed it pretty significantly from the original version that began shooting over a decade ago, with Jean Rochefort and Johnny Depp in the cast, only to be shut down by illness, injury, and natural disasters.

Now, Variety says, the story "a commericals director who is confused with Sancho Panza by a deluded actor who played Don Quixote in a movie the exec once shot." At this point, I don't really care about the particulars, and I'm intrigued by the idea that Gilliam and his conspirators have continued to warp and tweak their storyline.
