VOTD: Gen Ip's Year-End Retrospective 'Filmography 2013'

We see a lot of year-end movie mashups, but for a couple years running some of the best have been from LA-based editor Gen Ip, who we talked to back in 2010.

For Filmography 2013, she's put together a seven-minute edit of scenes from 2013 films, organized around a core group of themes. Plenty of other people have done similar projects, but this one is a bit more gentle than some. It still relies on a lot of trailer moments, but there's an almost narrative thematic sense here, together with a spot-on rhythmic sense that incorporates dialogue in a catchy manner that does more of the heavy emotional lifting than the music does.

Check out the video below.

Gen explains,

This video takes 300 of this year's films and distills it into a 7-minute exploration of the ideas we keep coming back to: the purpose of life, the nature of evil, the mystery of death, the power of love, and the inevitability of time. Or, it's just a pretty cool mashup of movies from 2013. Either way: I hope you enjoy.

A full movie list, along with a discussion of the reason for organizing around specific themes, is here. There's also at least one 2014 film in there, which you probably spotted right away.
