New Stills And Character Details Revealed For 'The Lego Movie'

With direction by Phil Lord and Chris Miller and a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Ferrell – not to mention the timeless appeal of Legos themselves — The Lego Movie has the potential to become one of the highlights of next year's lineup. But although the first trailer was released all the way back in June, plot specifics have been kept pretty vague. Until now.

A wealth of new information has just come out about the movie, including details about and new images of all the major characters. Check 'em out and get all the latest details after the jump.

The plot, which Lord described as "The Wizard of Oz meets The Matrix," follows the uptight President Business (Ferrell) as he tries to stop Master Builders like mystic Wyldstyle (Banks) and Vitruvius (Morgan Freeman) from expressing their creativity. "We basically made a made a movie about totalitarianism for kids," said Lord.

The protagonist, however, is an ordinary Lego figure named Emmet (Pratt) who gets caught up in the adventure when Wyldstyle mistakes him for a savior called "The Special."

See the characters and read their descriptions below:

  • Emmet is a "very, very normal construction worker" with an very Andy Dwyer-esque "dim, but unbridled excitement" about the adventure. "We like the challenge of a story around the most generic, forgettable man in the universe," said Lord.
  • Wildstyle is a car-building Master Builder with "an independent streak as wild as the color streaks in her plastic hair." Bankes describes her as "real sassy" and "very much me in two-inch form."
  • Batman has been portrayed in many, many different ways over the years, and like the other versions this one has a mean scowl, a gruff voice, and a protective streak. But he "can be a little inept," and Will Arnett says he "might not be the greatest Batman."
  • President Business secretly also goes by Lord Business. He abhors creativity and innovation, and wants everything to stay exactly the same. To that end, this uptight CEO plans to take over the Lego world with the help of his robot militia.
  • Vitruvius is the mystic who prophecies that "The Special" will come to defeat Lord Business. While he looks like Gandalf, he doesn't have the wizard's way with words. "We gave him the most ridiculous things to say," says Lord.
  • Bad Cop is President Business's meanest henchman, but he can turn into Good Cop "with a quick swivel of his head." He "will do anything for President Business," explains Liam Neeson.
  • USA Today also shared a few general stills from the movie featuring Emmet and Wyldstyle in action.

I love that although this is a 3D, CG-animated film, it doesn't have that slick 3D, CG-animated feel. The photos almost look like they could've been snapped during the middle of a real-life play session with actual Legos. The Lego Movie opens February 7, 2014.
