'Pacific Rim' Alternate CES Trailer Features New Glimpses Of Monster-Fighting Technology

Today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures showed off a new trailer for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim. More properly, this is an alternate trailer, as this new edit features the same basic structure and much of the same footage as the first trailer. But it does have quite a few new shots that give clues to the tech humans put into action to fight off waves of invading giant monsters.

The trailer also still features that recognizable GLaDOS voice, courtesy of voice actor Ellen McLain, though del Toro recently told the Toronto Sun that McLain's voice won't be processed in quite the same way in the final mix. ("The filter we're using is slightly less GLaDOS," he said. "Slightly. The one in the trailer I wanted to be full-on GLaDOS.")

Regardless, there's enough good new stuff in the trailer below that it demands a look.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12. In addition all the robots and monsters, the film stars Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Brad William Henke, and Diego Klattenhoff.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
