First Look: Jewel As June Carter Cash In Lifetime Biopic

While we've been busy fussing over how much Lindsay Lohan looks (or doesn't look) like Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime's Liz & Dick, another biopic from the cable channel has quietly been pushing forward. Singer/songwriter Jewel was cast last month as the lead in the TV movie The June Carter Cash Story, and we now have the first look of her in character alongside Matt Ross (American Horror Story), who plays Johnny Cash. Hit the jump to take a look.

Director Allison Anders (Southland) then posted a few more of her own, featuring Jewel as June, Frances Conroy as Maybelle Carter, and John Doe and Andy Stahl as brothers A.P. and "Eck" Carter.

Richard Friedenberg (A River Runs through It) based his screenplay on the biography Anchored in Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash by her son John Carter Cash, so perhaps it'll be more faithful than the average based-on-a-true-story project. (Though probably not.) The June Carter Cash story will follow the famed musician from her early days to her marriage to Johnny Cash.

Though, frankly, there's only so much one can expect from a Lifetime movie, Jewel has a lot to live up to in some respects. Not only is June Carter Cash a beloved figure, it'll be tough to avoid comparing Jewel's performance to Reese Witherspoon's Oscar-winning turn in James Mangold's 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. At least we already know that Jewel can sing.

While there's no word yet on exactly when The June Carter Cash story will air, it's expected to debut sometime this year.
