Kevin Smith's Comic Shop Reality Show To Air On AMC

Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and now Kevin Smith. The soon-to-be retired filmmaker is making sure that, after his final film Hit Somebody, he'll have plenty of alternative media to keep himself busy. He's already got his own Internet radio station, S.I.R., and he's developing a reality TV show that will take place at his personal comic book shop, Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash in Red Bank, NJ. Dubbed as sort of a "Pawn Stars for Fanboys," the show has been casting over the last week and Smith just tweeted that he's already got an awesome and unlikely network interested in airing it: AMC.

The show was recently announced when an open casting call went out for geeks to star on the show. Here's the info

Have you ever wanted to work in a comic book shop? Silent Bob himself, Kevin Smith, is casting a new television series set in his comic shop "The Secret Stash." He's not looking for actors, he's looking for real people who live and breath the comic book lifestyle. Must be funny outgoing and have a knowledge and passion for comics, superheroes, movie memorabilia and everything that goes with it. Looking for men and women ages 21 – 35 in the Tri-state area only. Must be available in Red Bank, NJ on either June 2nd or June 3rd AND a 3-day shoot on June 14th – 16th. To apply, send a picture and a short bio including name, age, and phone number to comiccasting@gmail.com If you are selected, we will contact you to schedule a follow up interview.

We're also looking for people in the Tri-state area with cool, unique, rare, or otherwise awesome comic book/movie memorabilia. It's Pawn Stars for Fanboys, and if you have something to sell/trade/or value, we want you to bring it to us! Must be available in Red Bank, NJ on either June 2nd or June 3rd AND one additional day between June 14th – 16th. To apply, send a picture of yourself, and a description and picture of the item with your name, age, and phone number to comiccasting@gmail.com. If you are selected, we will contact you to schedule a follow up interview.

Smith followed that up by answering a fan question on Twitter with the news of the network. Since there's no pilot yet, there's certainly no guarantee that the show will make it to air but when we contacted AMC, they pointed us to a recent news story stating they'd be getting into more unscripted entertainment. Smith's show seems to fall under that statement.

First off, this sounds like a show I would definitely watch. However, it doesn't really sound like something that fits with AMC's brand. Are you going to watch Don Draper sip some scotch, Walter White make some meth, and then a nerd sell his lightsaber?

AMC is a TV station that, when it comes to original programming, has generally favored the hour-long, scripted drama. They have a great reputation and its a coup that Smith has them interested but, even though they'll be getting into more reality based shows in the future (their first one will probably be Inside the DHS, about Homeland Security, aimed at a late 2011 premiere) Smith's show still feels like a mismatch. If it even makes it to air at all.

What do you think about all of this?
