The 25 Best Movie Robots of All Time

Robocop

5. Robocop, RoboCop (1987)

Alex Murphy may be more human than robot, but it’s his robot side that makes him so special, memorable and just plain kick ass. Super cool design, one of my favorite guns of all time and anyone who can beat the ED-209 is good in my book.

Terminator 2 Arnold Schwarzenegger

4. T-800, The Terminator (1984)

He’s good, he’s bad, he’s a protector, he’s a martyr, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic turn as the the unstoppable robot is simply unforgettable. And while I prefer the T2 version (pictured above) that version wouldn’t exist without the first, so we’ll sort of package them together.

Short Circuit Johnny 5

3  Johnny-5, Short Circuit (1986)

Growing up in the Eighties, Johnny-5 was the most memorable robot out there. Besides being a staple of pop culture, he was funny, he was crazy, and unlike most other robots on this list, he was very robotic. He didn’t really resemble a human, except in the fact that he has a heart like one.

The Iron Giant

2. The Iron Giant, The Iron Giant (1999)

Brad Bird’s amazing creation is all about duality. He’s a weapon, he’s a protector, he’s bad, he’s good, he’s got a distinctly retro vibe, but is filled with modern technology. The Iron Giant is an insanely beautiful and awesome robot.

And the best movie robot of all time is…

Star Wars 7 R2 D2 Photo

1. R2-D2, Star Wars (1977)

R2-D2 is everything you want in a robot. He’s got charisma, he’s resourceful, he’s cute, funny, brave and insanely adaptable. The design is unforgettable and he’s absolutely indispensable in a pinch. Pretty much, he’s the best movie robot ever.
