Dungeons & Dragons, Evil Dead Rise, And Three Other Movies We're Excited To See At SXSW 2023

Get ready for good films and even better BBQ, because the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Conference and Festival is back, baby! The first wave of film and TV programming announcements were made today, and SXSW is cooking up a feast of a line-up.

"We are thrilled to announce the first wave of our incredible lineup for SXSW 2023," said Claudette Godfrey, VP Film & TV, in a statement. "It's an amazing collection of films, TV series and XR experiences that promise to inspire, entertain and challenge our audiences." Godfrey also said, "We're also proud to open with 'Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,' a raucous and engaging fantasy adventure, and look forward to welcoming everyone to Austin in March for what promises to be an unforgettable event."

SXSW runs from March 10 to 18, 2023 in Austin, Texas. You can see the full announced 2023 SXSW film festival line-up below, but here are five that we can't wait to put in front of our eyeballs.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Dungeons & Dragons is the most popular roleplaying game in the world, and folks have struggled to find a way to bring that imaginative world to the big screen for decades. As the stories of D&D are imaginative and personal adventures, it's not as easy to craft a script that captures the world of the game the way it would be for something more structured like "Clue." Fortunately, writer/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have turned the game into the blockbuster adventure "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Sophia Lillis, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, and Hugh Grant. Buzz for the film has been roaring since the panel and footage preview at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, but SXSW is the perfect place to premiere the highly-anticipated release.

We've already been promised that "Honor Among Thieves" will boast some impressive digital monsters by the folks at Industrial Light and Magic, but that there will be plenty of practical creatures from Legacy Effects, the team that brought Grogu/Baby Yoda to life for "The Mandalorian." I'm trying not to be too optimistic because I'd really like to not have my heart broken, but I've got a really good feeling about this one.

Evil Dead Rise

You had me at the cheese grater scene in the trailer. Okay, that's a lie. I was down with "Evil Dead Rise" the second it was announced because I am a sicko who will never be tired of anything related to the Deadite-infested world of Sam Raimi. Director Lee Cronin is bringing the Necronomicon to a Los Angeles apartment complex to torment a single mother and her three kids, and there are few things I want more in this world than to see a Deadite terrorizing an apartment building hallway. Shockingly, "Evil Dead Rise" is not opening the Midnighters block of horror/genre films, which goes to show Warner Bros. must have some serious faith in the film to include it as part of the festival's main slate.

This will certainly be one of the films that people won't be able to stop talking about, and the hype train between SXSW and the film's wide release in April will be agonizing for any horror fan unable to catch the world premiere. There's really not much more to say. It's a new "Evil Dead" movie. Get excited or get thrown in the fruit cellar.

The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution

Ondi Timoner is one of the most highly-acclaimed documentarians currently working. "Dig!," "Join Us," "We Live in Public," and "Mapplethorpe" are all absolutely fantastic, which is all the more reason to be excited for the world premiere of "The New Americans: Gaming a Revolution." The documentary has been described by SXSW as "a visceral, meme-driven journey at the intersection of finance, media, and extremism, which uncovers the connection between the Gamestop squeeze and the Jan 6th Insurrection and reveals explosive possibilities of our digital future."

Describing the last few years as "weird" is the understatement of the century, and the way the internet has been interwoven into all of that weirdness would be fascinating if it wasn't so terrifying. There have been plenty of documentaries and docuseries that have tried to capture how digital communication has irreparably changed, but none of them have had the touch of Timoner. I'm really interested in seeing what elements of online culture she dives into, and what her thoughts are on where we're headed next. Will it spark an existential crisis? Probably. But that's half the fun, isn't it?

The Wrath of Becky

When the world shut down in 2020, I was privileged to live in close proximity to a drive-in theater, which meant I spent as much time as possible sitting in my car and watching whatever movie would come to town. Luckily for me, one of those titles was "Becky," a film where a 13-year-old girl (Lulu Wilson) defends her family during a home invasion and kills a bunch of nazis led by Kevin James. The film was an absolute blast and a half and surely would have performed better had it not been for the pandemic. Fortunately, SXSW is giving us the unexpected treat of "The Wrath of Becky," an unexpected sequel I didn't know I needed. Wilson returns in the titular role; after living off the grid for the past two years, Becky finds herself facing off against the leader of a fascist organization the night before their planned attack.

I will never not be a fan of teenage girls bodying idiotic fascists, but now that she's a little older and a bit more worldly, I'm hoping the training wheels are off and Becky wipes the floor with these morons. While character assignments haven't been given, we know that Seann William Scott, Matt Angel, Courtney Gains, Aaron Della Villa, Michael Sirow, Denise Burse-Fernandez, Jill Larson, and Kate Siegel are all part of the cast. I am praying that Seann William Scott is the leader of the fascists because there is nothing funnier to me than the idea of Stifler from "American Pie" getting rightfully destroyed by a teenage girl. This will also be the film's world premiere.

Bloody Hell

Written and directed by Molly McGlynn ("Mary Goes Round," "Grace & Frankie," "Bless This Mess") and produced by Jennifer Weiss and Liane Cunje, "Bloody Hell" is about a teenage girl who is diagnosed with a medical condition that makes having sex incredibly difficult, so she is forced to find unusual ways to have a sex life, much to the chagrin of just about everyone in her life ... including herself. The film is partially inspired by McGlynn's own diagnosis of MRKH Syndrome and will feature Maddie Ziegler ("West Side Story," "The Fallout") in the starring role. "Schitt's Creek" actress Emily Hampshire will play Ziegler's mother, and the film features Djouliet Amara, Ki Griffin, and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai in undisclosed roles. SXSW marks the world premiere of the film.

The movie has been described as a "traumedy," and the premise makes for an exciting coming-of-age story. Last year, we saw obnoxious protests from ignorant parents about Pixar's "Turning Red" daring to include the acknowledgment that some people in this world menstruate, so seeing a film unafraid to tackle a story about a girl who really wants to have sex but can't because biology has made the decision for her is exciting. I can't wait to see how it all plays out.
