'The Amusement Park' Trailer: George A. Romero's Lost Movie Is Headed To Shudder In June

In the 1970s, Night of the Living Dead director George A. Romero was commissioned by the Lutheran Society to make a movie – the filmmaker's only work-for-hire film in his entire career. That film, titled The Amusement Park, was a twisted meditation on ageism, and it was thought to be lost. But recently, Romero's Amusement Park was rediscovered and remastered – and now it's headed to Shudder. It's part of the horror streaming service's summer slate, and there's a great new trailer for you to watch below.

The Amusement Park Trailer

By all accounts, The Amusement Park isn't a horror movie in the traditional sense. But gosh darn it, this is a well-cut trailer. It sells a surreal, unsettling experience, and I can't wait to see it. Here's the backstory:

Recently discovered and restored 46 years after its completion by the George A. Romero Foundation and produced by Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, The Amusement Park stars Martin's Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies and humiliations of aging in America are manifested through roller coasters and chaotic crowds. Commissioned by the Lutheran Society, the film is perhaps Romero's wildest and most imaginative movie, an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and is an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker's early artistic capacity and style and would go on to inform his ensuing filmography. The "lost" film was restored in 4k by IndieCollect in New York City.

"The first and only work-for-hire in Romero's career sheds a new perspective on an ongoing issue of ageism and Romero's uncanny sense of reflection on society, and the Romero 'footprint' is ever present and bodes well for the future of his impact on American cinema," said Romero's wife Suzanne Desrocher-Romero. The prospect of getting a "new" Romero movie some four years after his death is incredibly exciting, and the fact that it's headed to Shudder is just more confirmation that the horror streaming service is something of a godsend.
