Steven Spielberg has always wanted to make a musical, and now he has, with West Side Story. Based on the Broadway musical that first launched in 1957, and was then turned into a film in 1961, West Side Story is the tale of star-crossed lovers in 1957 New York. Unlike the 1961 film, Spielberg only wanted actors with Hispanic backgrounds to play Hispanic characters, and he’s assembled a cast of familiar faces and new names. He’s also brought back Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for her role in the 1961 film, and here plays a new character. Watch the West Side Story trailer below.

black widow release date delayed

Disney has pushed back its entire fall theatrical release schedule by several months, moving films like Marvel’s Black Widow and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story to 2021. Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile, originally set to premiere in theaters in October 2020, has been pushed back to December, while 2021 films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals have been moved deeper into 2021. The only major fall film to keep its release date is Pixar’s Soul, which stays in its late November release slot, despite expectations that it would be delayed or get dropped on Disney+.

Thanks to the spread of coronavirus, most of the major theatrical releases over the next couple weeks (and probably at least the next month) are being pushed to unknown dates sometime down the road. But when it comes to Steven Spielberg’s forthcoming remake of the classic musical West Side Story, slated for release in December, we probably don’t have to worry that movie getting delayed. Rita Moreno was on a Television Critics Association panel for One Day at a Time. Netflix cancelled the sitcom, but Pop brought it back for a fourth season. Moreno also appears in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story, which is noteworthy becuase Moreno won an Oscar for her role in Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ original 1961 adaptation of the musical.

Moreno hung around after the One Day at a Time panel to talk to journalists more about West Side Story. Ariana DeBose now plays Moreno’s original role of Anita, but they created the new character of Valentina for Moreno.

Last month, we got our first look at Steven Spielberg‘s remake of West Side Story starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the musical take on the classic star-crossed romance of Romeo & Juliet. That photo also included David Alvarez (Billy Elliott: The Musical) and Josh Andrés Rivera (Hamilton) as Maria’s brother and Sharks leader Bernardo and gang member Chino, respectively.
