the plot against america review

“There’s a lot of hate out there. And he knows how to tap into it.” That comment, spoken early in The Plot Against America, refers to Charles Lindbergh, but it’s impossible to separate it from our current events, and our current occupier of the White House. Philip Roth’s source material novel was published in 2004, before the rise of Trumpism, but its storyline of America slipping into full-blown fascism due to the election of a hate-stoking candidate is depressingly more relevant than ever. And that’s part of what makes this admittedly fantastic HBO miniseries so damn difficult to watch.

The Plot Against America trailer

“There’s a lot of hate out there, and he knows how to tap into it.”

That’s a line from this new trailer for HBO’s adaptation of Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America, but it just as easily be about the current occupant of the White House. The six-episode limited series is set in an alternate history of the United States during the 1940 presidential election, but the parallels to our real world political environment today are stark and unsettling. Check out the trailer below.

Philip Roth’s The Plot Against America is probably more relevant now than it was when published in 2004, and that should disturb everyone. Roth’s novel is getting the miniseries treatment from HBO, courtesy of The Wire creator David Simon. The story is set during World War II in an alternate America, where Charles Lindbergh wins the presidency and quickly turns the country toward fascism. Watch The Plot Against America trailer below.

The Plot Against America Series

HBO presented a Television Critics Association panel on their miniseries The Plot Against America, adapted from Philip Roth’s book. Writer and executive producer David Simon was on a panel with cast members Zoe Kazan, Morgan Spector, Winona Ryder, Anthony Boyle and John Turturro. The book and the show tell a story of a world in which Charles Lindbergh ran against FDR and got elected President of the United States in 1940.

The story deals with anti-Semitism in World War II, as a different American President, and one with anti-Semitic leanings, alters the course of history.
