Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society awards winners

It’s only been a few days since the members of the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society released the nominees for their annual awards, and the winners have already been determined. However, don’t expect this to be an indication of how any of the major awards are going to go down later this season. Our editor-in-chief Peter Sciretta is counted among this group, and the wide array of film critics from various backgrounds makes the results skew much further from the norm than you might expect at the Golden Globes or Oscars.

The Hate U Give

At the turn of the decade, the young adult novel mostly meant a star-crossed romance and many times included a supernatural being, vampire or werewolf.

Angie Thomas changed the game when her 2017 novel The Hate U Give drew inspiration from the recent, police-involved shooting of unarmed black people and the Black Lives Matter movement. Helmed by George Tillman, Jr., the raw, tense and heartbreaking film adaptation stays mostly faithful to the source material, delivering an Oscar-worthy flick that is one of the year’s best.

The Hate U Give

20th Century Fox has shifted the release date of its highly-anticipated film adaptation of the mega-popular young adult novel The Hate U Give, sliding it up two weeks to hit select theaters on October 5, 2018 before expanding the next week and then opening wide on October 19, 2018.

Fox has also released a new clip and a featurette from the film, which focuses on a young girl’s journey to find her voice as she speaks up about witnessing a police officer shooting an unarmed black kid. Watch them both below.

The Hate U Give trailer starts off like a fairly ordinary teen movie: Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) is a high school student who likes playing basketball with her rich, white prep school friends during the week, and partying with her friends from the poor, mostly black, neighborhood on the weekends. She likes hip-hop music and joking with her friends in the car.

But then things take a turn when she witnesses her childhood best friend killed by a police officer. The shooting sets off a domino effect that forces Starr to grapple with her place between her two different worlds, and wrestle with the injustice of the world.

Paramount and Fox 2000 have set several movie release dates for upcoming films, and possible canned one big franchise entry.

While the latest entry for Michael Bay‘s Transformers series has been pulled from the schedule, Paramount and Fox 2000 have set release dates for the highly anticipated YA adaptation The Hate U Give, the Elton John biopic Rocketman, and the feature adaptation of Stephen King‘s Pet Sematary.

If you’ve paid any attention to the young adult book market over the past couple of years, you’re probably familiar with The Hate U Give, author Angie Thomas‘s wildly popular best-seller about a young black woman who becomes an activist after seeing the police gun down her unarmed friend. It’s been a hit since it debuted in January of 2017, and Fox 2000 is adapting it into a movie.
