the quarantine stream tesla

(Welcome to The Quarantine Stream, a series where the /Film team shares what they’ve been watching while social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.)

The Movie: Tesla

Where You Can Stream It: Hulu

The Pitch: A biopic of Nikola Tesla that avoids the standard biopic trappings.

Why It’s Essential Quarantine Viewing: Tesla had a very, very limited release, and now it’s streaming on Hulu – which is the perfect opportunity for people to discover it. The story of Nikola Tesla has been covered on film before – be it in Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige, or the recent The Current War. But Michael Almereyda’s take on the great inventor bucks tradition and goes for a weirder, more surreal approach to Tesla’s life. They are being utilized more and more in film and television, but appreciation can still go unnoticed and unappreciated despite their esoteric knowledge. Thanks to scientific consultants, characters are more realistic, storylines are more probable, and science on screen is more entertaining.

In order to dive deeper into this process, I recently spoke with scientific consultant P. James Schuck on his contributions to director Michael Almereydas latest film, the stunning biopic Tesla

tesla movie review

The word Teslais mostly associated with Elon Musks company these days, but it was named after a famous scientist who was way ahead of his time. Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was an inventor, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and futurist who conjured theories of text messages and fiber optic internet in the late 1800s. While some films have previously portrayed the famous scientist, notably The Current War and The Prestige, none ignite an eclectic vibrancy quite like writer/director Michael Almereydas Tesla

The movie biopic has become so rote that even the word can elicit a sense of nagging boredom. So how do you inject some life into the prestigious, but ultimately by-the-numbers, biographical drama? By hitting it with a little lightning. Tesla stars Ethan Hawke as the groundbreaking inventor Nikola Tesla, whose discoveries in wireless energy would change the world. And with his fourth wall-breaking biopic Tesla, director Michael Almereyda hopes to change our perception of the genre.
