With December just around the corner, we’re heading into the home stretch for the marketing machine leading up to the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. As more TV spots will be hitting the web, director Rian Johnson and the cast of the next installment of the Star Wars saga will begin making the publicity rounds on all the late night and morning talk shows, and they’ll be kicking things off in a familiar place.
Since Disney owns both Lucasfilm and ABC, it should come as no surprise that the director and cast of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be making their first late night stop on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Friday, December 1. It’s bound to be a big Star Wars-centric episode since no less than nine cast members will be in attendance. Get more details about the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Jimmy Kimmel Live episode below. It’s clear to everyone who watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Captain Phasma – the chrome-armored First Order officer played by Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie – got the shaft in that movie. And I mean that metaphorically as well as literally: not only was she barely in the film, but the last we saw of the character, she was being unceremoniously dumped into a garbage chute.
We’ll find out how she escaped that unfortunate situation in an upcoming Marvel comic series, but let’s take a quick look at how she came to be such a fierce warrior fighting for the First Order to begin with. A Star Wars novel fills in much of Captain Phasma’s backstory, and a new excerpt has provided us with some insight into Phasma’s origins.

In addition to a new crew of instantly lovable heroes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced one of the best and most complex villains in the history of the saga: Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. It also introduced Gwendoline Christie‘s Captain Phasma, who looked really, really cool, but didn’t do much of anything in the actual plot.
As you’d expect, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will continue the journey of both characters and some newly revealed details offer a tease of what we can expect.

We’ve got quite some time until we see the seventh season of Game of Thrones hit HBO. To accommodate the shooting schedule, the debut of the new season won’t arrive in spring like the previous seasons but will instead hit during the summer of 2017. That was also accompanied by confirmation that this season will have less episodes than the previous seasons as the show begins to wind down. In addition, the later premiere means this season of Game of Thrones wont be eligible to win any Emmys like it did not too long ago.
If you’re bummed out from us reminding you of all those facts, we’ll try to life your spirits up with some new Game of Thrones season 7 details, specifically about which characters Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) will finally meet. But beware that these details venture into spoiler territory, so beware from here on out. Read More »

The first season of Jane Campion‘s Top of the Lake was a master class in tension and dread, a meticulously crafted mystery powered by pain and fury. Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss proved to be perfectly cast as the brittle detective at the heart of the action, trying to solve a puzzle in a hometown full of traumatic memories.
All of which means the second season has a pretty high bar to clear if it wants to live up to the first, let alone surpass it. But hiring Gwendoline Christie is probably a good first step. The Game of Thrones and Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress is set for a “major” role in the drama, and a bunch of new plot details have just been revealed to go along with that casting announcement. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a good movie, but let’s not pretend that it’s free of sin. Here is a superbly crafted movie full of terrific actors giving wonderful performances, but you can fill a few buckets with the nitpicks you collect while watching it. Some you can brush off. Others stick in you, tear at your skin, and leave a little mark that makes you wonder what everyone was thinking.
Let’s turn our focus to Captain Phasma, the chrome-plated stormtrooper who was placed front and center in so much marketing (and in the toy aisle), only to literally do nothing of consequence in the final film. However, we can all agree on two things: that sure is some cool armor and actress Gwendoline Christie sure wears it well. But where did this suit of armor come from? Who made it? Who gave it to her? It turns out that Captain Phasma’s armor has a totally true origin story that actually happened and isn’t a silly video cooked up for internet laughs. Honest! And you can watch it below.
