'The Mummy' And 'Pirates 5' TV Spots Are Here To Remind You Summer Is Almost Upon Us

The summer movie season hasn't started yet, but after The Fate of the Furious' monster opening weekend at the box office, it almost feels like it's already begun. Two other mega popcorn movies coming up are The Mummy and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Director Alex Kurtzman will try to launch the monster universe, while Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg attempt to breathe new life into the Pirates franchise.

The fifth addition to the Pirates franchise is following Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a low-spirited adventure movie that made over a billion dollars. Five years later, after a series of disappointments starring Johnny Depp and the start of some bigger and better franchises, we'll see if audiences are still as passionate about crafty Jack Sparrow next month.

Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Depp may surpass expectations, though. The first reactions to the film are encouraging. "It's a much better film than the last installment and has many improvements over the first two sequels in the original trilogy," Peter wrote after enjoying the movie at Cinema Con. The highest praise for the sequel is that it's more character-driven, like Gore Verbinski's original film.

Two weeks after Pirates of the Carribean hits theaters, one of the few great movie stars, Tom Cruise, will have to save the world again after possibly bringing about its destruction in The Mummy. The actor stars in Kurtzman's monster-heavy action movie, which features Cruise looking truly outmatched for the first time in years.

The Mummy is a significant departure from Kurtzman's first film, the shaggy but sincere and likable People Like Us. Kurtzman, known for co-writing the Transformers and Star Trek movies, showed promise with his first effort. If he can bring some of the humanity of his first movie to a big popcorn movie like The Mummy, then maybe we'll get some real scares and thrills from the first entry in the burgeoning Universal Monster Universe.

Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess (Sofia Boutella of Kingsman: The Secret Service and Star Trek Beyond) whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.

From the sweeping sands of the Middle East through hidden labyrinths under modern-day London, The Mummy brings a surprising intensity and balance of wonder and thrills in an imaginative new take that ushers in a new world of gods and monsters.

The Mummy opens on June 9, 2017 and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales opens on May 26, 2017.
