Marvel's 2020 Movies Are Spoilers For 'Avengers: Infinity War'
A year ago, Disney announced three untitled Marvel movies for the year 2020, and we still have no idea what they might be. We've speculated, and speculated some more, but Marvel has not given any clues about which of their comic book franchises will be taking these release dates, until now. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige hints that Marvel's 2020 movies might be a spoiler for Avengers: Infinity War and the yet-to-be-titled Avengers 4.
Talking to the Toronto Sun, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige gave the first clues as to what we can expect from these 2020 Marvel movies:
"Where we go after Avengers; what those 2020 films are, we're pretty sure what those are going to be... but if I tell you that, we're getting into spoilers," says Feige.
That statement may not seem like much, but I think it's very telling. These three release dates follow Marvel's yet-to-be-titled fourth Avengers film, which was originally the second part of Avengers: Infinity War. While Avengers 4 may not be titled Avengers: Infinity War Part II, I have heard from many people that it will very much be a direct continuation of the events of Infinity War. Avengers: Infinity War will leave our heroes in a place that will be resolved in the fourth film. It's very likely the reason that movie has not been titled publicly because the name might spoil the outcome of Infinity War, and like the other Avengers films, borrow its title from a comic book storyline that fans are familiar with.
So with that in mind, let's take a look back at Feige's comments. Why would the three 2020 Marvel films be a spoiler? Only if they are based on characters or events created by Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel Avengers 4. Remember what director Anthony Russo once teased about the two films:
...They will end up changing the MCU more profoundly than any movie has yet, and there will be some things that come to an end in those movies, dimensions of the MCU will end in those film, dimensions will change forever in those films, dimensions will find new life in those films. They're a real threshold for what we've come to know as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I think that dimension can be a little intimidating but also exciting.
So the big question is, where could these two Avengers films end? What characters and situations might they introduce? Feige recently told me that the events of Infinity War will surprise fans of the comics:
In the immediate future, being the movies, we've announced... I think those with knowledge of the comics may expect things that will not be happening in the movies. Those who don't know what has happened in the comics will be shocked at what we do. But yeah, once that Gauntlet is on, as the poster of Doctor Strange says, "the impossibilities are endless." How do you fight that? How can you defeat that?
I think we're definitely going to finally see some of our Marvel superheroes die on screen during Infinity War. I'm just speculating now, but if someone like Steve Rogers died in this epic battle, maybe one of the next films could be Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) taking on the title of Captain America? Heck, Steve Rogers is no longer Captain America in the MCU right now anyways.
Feige has even recently confirmed that the Captain America movies could move on without Steve Rogers. So perhaps one of these films is Captain America 4 and is titled something like Captain America: Rise of the Falcon.
Okay, so that's a decidedly bad title, but you get my point. And aside from deaths and reboots, maybe we'll see some new characters introduced in these films. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is changed dramatically, perhaps it would introduce a new species of superheroes like say the Inhumans. Remember, Feige told me a couple of weeks back that the Inhumans "will happen for sure," Maybe he said this because it is one of the three 2020 movies?
