'London Road' Trailer: Tom Hardy Joins An Ensemble Musical Cast

Here's the first trailer for an unusual film musical. London Road is an adaptation of the stage musical that used real interviews with Ipswich townspeople as the basis for songs telling the story of community reaction to the actions Steve Wright, known as the Suffolk Strangler, who murdered five prostitutes in 2006. In other words, this is really heavy stuff, but told in a way that initially seems to contradict the weighty material.

Directed by Rufus Norris (Broken), the film features the acclaimed original stage cast, adds Olivia Colman, and also counts Tom Hardy amongst its roster. (Hardy only has one number in the film, so you won't see him much in this marketing.) Check out the terrific London Road trailer below.

London Road opens in UK theaters on June 12. Trailer via The Guardian.

Based on the National Theatre's highly acclaimed verbatim musical directed by Rufus Norris, which he now directs as a feature film, LONDON ROAD documents an incident from 2006, when the town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and kerb-crawling on their street. When Steve Wright, the occupant of no. 79, was arrested, charged and then convicted of the murders, the community grappled with what it meant to be at the epicentre of this tragedy. Adam Cork's music uses the rhythmic speech patterns captured on Alecky Blythe's recorded interviews with the people of Ipswich to create this extraordinary work, which reveals the ways in which even the darkest experiences can engender a greater sense of our mutual dependence.
