Avatar Re-Release TV Spot Features New Footage

On August 27th, Fox will re-release Avatar to theaters with more than eight minutes of "Never Before Seen Footage" exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. (That is: no 2D re-release.) Now there's a TV spot for the special edition, and while it is only 30 seconds long, hardcore fans of the film will notice there are a couple new shots to be seen in the clip.

Director James Cameron previously said of the special edition re-release,

The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We're going to assess that. We're talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.

The whole point of the re-release is simple: to get as much out of sustained interest in the film as possible. Since bookings for Alice in Wonderland meant Fox had to pull Avatar from many 3D screens before audiences were no longer coming out to see the film, there's a projection that Fox "left a couple hundred million dollars on the table."

Cameron later said, "We're working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August."

Here's Fox's official statement on the re-release:

On August 27, return to Pandora and re-experience James Cameron's History-Making Epic film, with more than Eight Minutes of Never Before Seen Footage- exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX® 3D. Since – and largely as of result of – AVATAR's release last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D, as well as fans that want to return to Pandora again, will now have that opportunity.

The Oscar® and Golden Globe® winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.
