2021 Black List Reveals The Best Unmade Screenplays Of The Year

The annual Black List has been announced, and it's time to speculate on what will get made, or at the very least, what will get a scriptwriter some powerful notice.

If you're not familiar with The Black List, it's a list of the most well-received screenplays that haven't been produced yet. The list has been around since 2005, and it's released every second Friday of December. The list is created from a survey of film executives working in the industry

Some really big movies have come out of The Black List, like "Spotlight," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Argo," "Hell or High Water," and "The King's Speech." As it says on the official Black List site:

"At its heart the annual Black Lists are meant to shine a light on extraordinary screenwriting, some of which may have been overlooked more broadly."

According to the press release for the 2021 edition, there are 73 screenplays and 71 writers or writing teams featured this year, and they were compiled from surveying more than 375 executives, each of whom listed a script as one of their 10 favorite unproduced screenplays of the year. So let's take a look at the list, and at some scripts that could, one day, become great movies.

We have the full list for you below, but here are some of the scripts that really stood out to me. 

First up is "Killer Instinct" from Lillian Yu: 

"After a Hollywood assistant is publicly fired for admitting while on a conference call that he'd love to kill his boss, he finds his boss dead in the office the next morning and goes on the lam to figure out the real culprit, all while being hunted by his boss's assassin."

I have thoughts, and the first one is; I'm surprised that this one was voted up so high by film people. Do Hollywood executives want to inspire their underlings to do stuff like this? I mean, I'm guessing the main guy didn't do it, but with the way people are posting these days, and with whistleblowers and #MeToo and #TimesUp and all the stories coming out of Hollywood about the way underlings are often treated, this seems ... oddly timed. But also not unwelcome.

Then there is "Ultra" from Colin Bannon:

"When an ultramarathoner learns he is one of ten contestants chosen to take part in a secret race known as "the hardest race on earth," he is forced to confront his past when he realizes there are deadly consequences for breaking the rules."

Forgive me for the personal reasons for picking this one, but I'm a marathon runner who is about to start looking at my first ultramarathon. (Those start at 50k, or a little over 31 miles, in case you're wondering.) Having read all the stories about the tragic ultramarathon in China last year where 21 runners died, this one sounds upsetting, yet fascinating.
