Everything We Know About The Peaky Blinders Movie So Far

Steven Knight's British drama series "Peaky Blinders" is concluding with season 6. Many fans of the Shelbys, including myself, have awaited the new season with bated breath. Will Tommy survive after his assassination attempt on the notorious Oswald Mosley went horrendously wrong? Will the politician seek retribution from the Shelbys? Will our favorite family of criminals get through the season alive? The questions are endless. Considering that Knight has already confirmed that a "Peaky Blinders" movie is in the making, it seems more fitting to delay important character deaths (if any) until then.

It's a relief to hear that "Peaky Blinders" isn't officially ending ... yet. Knight has always been very honest that he'd like to end the series with the first air-raid siren in Birmingham in 1939. The creator wants to "redeem" crime boss Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy), and continue to explore how he deals with the post-traumatic stress of the first World War, and how he never really moved past it.

So if the show ends with the first air-raid siren, what will the movie be about?

What We Think the Peaky Blinders Movie Be About

The Shelby family's criminal escapades will conclude with the upcoming season six, but their story will live on in the "Peaky Blinders" movie. Knight has shared that it will begin filming in 2023, and that the feature will be "set in and shot in Birmingham." The screenwriter also said that the movie "will probably be the sort of the end of the road for 'Peaky Blinders' as we know it."

That makes me wonder if the television series will serve as a conclusion for the show. In season 5, we discovered that there's a traitor within Tommy's inner circle, after the assassination mission on Mosley failed. The man who was commissioned for the job was murdered before he could take a shot at Mosley, angering the Shelby family patriarch; so much so, the season ended with Tommy pointing a gun to his head. If season 6 focuses on how the Shelbys navigate through this new obstacle that endangers them all, the movie might be set in the aftermath of the finale.

Since the final season will end with the signal to World War II, it might be intriguing to watch how the family responds to it. Tommy and his brothers are still learning to battle the horrors they experienced all those years ago, so sending their own children to fight in the war might be the last straw that pushes Tommy Shelby to his very extremes.

Which Cast Members Will Return For The Peaky Blinders Movie?

Along with Cillian Murphy, most of the regular cast are expected to return for the "Peaky Blinders" movie. It is unknown whether Murphy's character will survive the new season, but after serving as the protagonist for years, it would be unthinkable not to feature him in the film.

If Tommy's tense relationship with the fascist politician Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin) doesn't come to a close in season 6, the actor could return to reprise his role in the movie. The show's other main cast members are also likely to return, including Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby), Harry Kirton (Arthur's son Finn Shelby), and Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne).

Tommy has always been haunted by his first wife, Grace, who was murdered in the third season. Annabelle Wallis, the actress who plays Grace hinted on Twitter that she may return for season 6 — does that mean we might see a cameo from her in the movie? Natasha O'Keefe, who plays Lizzy Shelby, could also play a big role in the film.

Depending on how the series ends, Kate Philips (Linda Shelby), Finn Cole (Michael Gray) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Gina Gray) could join the film as well!

When Will the Peaky Blinders Movie Be Released?

While "Peaky Blinders" season 6 will release in early 2022, production on the film will not begin before 2023. For instance, if the project is filmed in the first half of 2023, it might be possible for Steven Knight to release it by the end of the year, or early 2024.

"Peaky Blinders" season 6 has been in the works for years now, but the show was severely affected by the COVID-19 imposed restrictions, and we haven't seen a new episode in over two years. Season 5 concluded in September 2019, and the wait for season 6 has been unending.

Once the upcoming final season is released, we might have more details about the cast, plot, and release date of the "Peaky Blinders" movie. All I'm hoping for is that Tommy Shelby powers through the hardships awaiting him in season 6 ... so we can have more of Cillian Murphy to look forward to!
