Is Season 2 Of Jujutsu Kaisen Ever Going To Happen?

Season 1 of "Jujutsu Kaisen" premiered in the US on October 3, 2020, and ended on March 27 of this year. The fate of "Jujutsu Kaisen" season 2 remains uncertain, but there's a good chance we haven't seen the last of it. With its refreshing take on the shonen genre, charming characters, and action-packed fight scenes, it only makes sense that anime fans are craving more. So let's take a look at the likelihood that we'll be treated to a second season of "Jujutsu Kaisen."

The Popularity of the Franchise Makes Season 2 Likely

The "Jujutsu Kaisen" manga is currently the bestselling manga of 2021, and the anime isn't far behind in terms of popularity and positive reception. In addition to the high volume of manga sales, "Jujutsu Kaisen" also won 2021's Anime of the Year at the 5th annual Crunchyroll Anime Awards.

Part of this popularity can likely be attributed to the way the anime subverts some of the more predictable, and sometimes problematic, aspects of the shonen genre while still maintaining the things that tend to draw fans to it. For instance, we have Yuji Itadori, the classic endearing protagonist who has been blessed (or in this case, quite literally cursed) with special abilities, and thrust into circumstances that indicate a great purpose or destiny. He starts off with a sort of wide-eyed idealism about the value of human life, and as such, he categorically condemns taking the life of another person. On the other hand, Itadori quickly receives a harsh reality check that adds some nuance to his formerly black and white ideas about justice and murder. This sort of moral conflict and compromise is rare for heroes of the genre.

Additionally, the women characters of the series avoid being weak, oversexualized, one-dimensional gender stereotypes who exist only to act as love interests or distractions for the protagonist. In fact, the women of "Jujutsu Kaisen" are incredibly powerful and have their own distinct goals, personalities, and beliefs that exist independently of their male counterparts. One of the anime's most memorable fight scenes even involves two women characters, Nobara and Momo, exchanging words about sexism and societal expectations. Nobara shuts down Momo's attempt to force her into a box by saying "I don't give a damn about 'men' this and 'women' that! You can keep that s*** to yourselves!" The scene could have easily come off as contrived, but "Jujutsu Kaisen" managed to execute it in a way that felt natural and believable.

It's pretty safe to assume that an incredibly popular anime that offers a fresh take on tired tropes, and more emotional depth than we're used to seeing, will return for a second season.

There Is a Prequel Movie In the Works

Adding to the probability of "Jujutsu Kaisen" being renewed for a second season is the fact that there is currently a movie in the works. The film, entitled "Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High," is set to release in Japan on December 24, but there is currently no official release date for the US and global audiences. Being a prequel, "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" takes place before the events of season 1, and will feature the character Yuta Okkotsu, who is only referenced in the first season. In addition to Yuta, fans can look forward to seeing familiar faces like Maki Zenin and Satoru Gojo in the movie.

While there's no definitive answer on if or when we'll get "Jujutsu Kaisen" season 2, it wouldn't make sense for the franchise to go backward with no intention of moving forward. Especially considering that season 1 of "Jujutsu Kaisen" left us with many unanswered questions and cliffhangers that can only be addressed by progressing the story with another season.
