Static Shock: Everything We Know So Far

More than 20 years after the beloved "Static Shock" animated TV series made its debut, the character is being brought to life in live-action. During this year's DC FanDome, it was confirmed that a movie centered on Virgil Hawkins, AKA the superhero Static, is in the works. The character, created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, debuted in the '90s under the Milestone Media banner, which was recently revived by DC. With a new comic taking off, the studio has now opted to double down by giving the go-ahead to a film as well. At this stage, much remains mysterious regarding the project, but we're here to let you in on everything we do know so far.

Here is everything we currently know about the "Static Shock" movie.

Michael B. Jordan is Producing

While much has yet to be determined, one of the big headlines for the "Static Shock" movie is that Michael B. Jordan ("Black Panther") is going to produce through his company Outlier Society. The door is open for Jordan to have a starring role as well, but that has yet to be firmed up. In a previous interview, Jordan expressed his excitement for the project.

"Right now, [I'm] really excited ... I mean, again, as a kid growing up, watching 'Static Shock,' it was something that inspired me. And had that type of representation at a young age, it was really important to me. And I know it would be important to a lot of other kids today. So to be able to adapt the live-action version of that, I'm really, really excited about. So no real timelines, and I guess no real updates or anything like that. But we're in the process of building that out. And I can't wait to have something more to tell you guys later."

Randy McKinnon is Writing the Static Shock Movie

While plot details for the cinematic take on Static remain under wraps, Randy McKinnon is the one who will be adapting the character into live-action for the first time. McKinnon is a relatively new, up-and-coming writer in Hollywood. He is mostly known at this stage for his work on shows like "Chambers" and "Grand Army." However, he is proving to be in-demand, as McKinnon is also writing "The Lost Boys" reboot.

Static Shock Is Being Made for HBO Max

Warner Bros. is going to be splitting its movies between theatrical releases and HBO Max in the future. "Static Shock," much like "Batgirl" and "Blue Beetle," will be produced as an exclusive release for the streaming service. While there are certainly many fans who would like to see Static on the big screen, the advent of streaming is what is making this movie viable for the studio in the first place. The need for content is allowing DC Films to expand with characters it might not have otherwise explored. And if this works, who knows what could happen in the future.

When Will Static Shock Be Released?

As of right now, no timetable for the "Static Shock" movie has been officially revealed. Unfortunately, we are likely going to be waiting a while. Both "Blue Beetle" and "Batgirl" are further along in the production process, as we don't even have a Virgil Hawkins cast yet. At best, we would expect to see it in late 2023, though that could change depending on how things go. We'll be sure to keep you posted as developments come to light.
